Nanatsusaya Mitama noTsurugi (Nanatsusaya) is the holy sword used by Alexiel during her rebellion against heaven. The sword is mainly controlled through the use of a pendant which holds the true spirit of the sword. It was said that Nanatsusaya was locked away because it was an evil sword that sucked the life out of it's users. Every previous wielder died (I think they killed themselves). Alexiel is the first wielder to be the true master of the sword. During the time of the rebellion, she hurt Rosiel with the sword and some of his blood stained it. It is this mark that makes him an immortal spirit that can reincarnate on Earth as a human. However, his soul was "immortal" even before that, for the sword contains the soul of the King of Hell, Lucifer. Although he is the soul of Lucifer, Nanatsusaya has none of his previous memories.

After Alexiel is sentenced to reincarnate on earth and die horribly each time, the spirit of Nanatsusaya follows her. Every time Alexiel reincarnates Nanatsusaya posseses the body of someone close to her. Countless times he has searched for her and watched over her. |
 However, for ages Nanatsusaya could do nothing more than watch as Alexiel died countless times, each time just as horrible as the last. It is like the tragedy of two lovers who can see each other, but never touch. He might always find her, but he can never truly save her. However, in his last incarnation (before Kira) he starts an action that will eventually lead the the end of the cycle of death. Alexiel's last reincarnation worked at a brothel, but she was in love with a yound samurai. When she attempts to run away with him she is caught by the brothel owners and her lover is killed. In her state of fear and anger she unleashes power that kills one of her masters. She flees, but they are searching for her...getting ready to torture and kill her. This is when Nanatsusaya appears. As the young samurai she loved dies, Nanatsusaya appears before him and makes a pact: Nanatsusaya will make the boy's wishes reality and in return he will receive the use of the body. The wish of the boy is to tell the woman he loves her and to give her peace (kill her.)

Nanatsusaya goes to find the woman (alexiel), but is baffled by this last wish. He does not understand love or any other human emotions. When he finds the woman she is ecstatic to see him and they then make love. After it seems that she has fallen alseep, Nanatsusaya raises his sword to kill her. She then awakens, only it is truly Alexiel who speaks, not just the reincarnation. Nanatsusaya is the first to break the cycle of fate by killing her mercifully. Alexiel recognizes this and is grateful. As Nanatsusaya brings his sword down a tear drops from his eye....there is a pain in his chest. Human emotions....extreme sorrow. It is the first time he has ever felt emotion. His first step to becoming more human. The next step will be Kira Sakuya. ***Note, the katana blade Nanatsusaya uses (as the samurai or as Kira) is called Shiranui. It belonged to the family of the young samurai, but it is a "spirit" sword as well and follows Nanatsusaya even after he has left the body of the young samurai. It claims Nanatsusaya as master and is then sealed within the mark left by Rosiel's blood. Nanatsusaya can call the sword at any given moment. Shiranui cannot hurt its master....even if slashed with the sword it will do no damage to the true owner. Now that you know about Lucifer and Nanatsusaya, it's time to get to know Kira Sakuya better.
