MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of The Education Committee of Hmong Community, Inc. is to promote the education of the Hmong people in the Detroit metropoltan area on all levels through educational activities.

Education Committee Background History

The annual graduation ceremony is a traditional celebration of the Hmong community of Detroit metropolitan. It was established since 1985 by Asian American Association (AAA). Due to a change in structure and leadership of AAA in 1994, the Hmong Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) took the responsibility of running the graduation for the following two years. In the spring of 1996, a meeting was called by both sides of Asian American Association and Hmong Parent-Teacher Organization to discuss the possibility of merging the two organizations. A merging resolution was reached and a newly formed organization named ÒDetroit Metro Hmong AssociationÓ was established to carry on the annual graduation.

One year after Detroit Metro Hmong Association was established, the leaders of the Hmong Community, Inc. requested a meeting with the leaders of Detroit Metro Hmong Association to discuss another merging between the two organizations. An agreement was made at the meeting to have Detroit Metro Hmong Association to become a standing committee of the Hmong Community, Inc. so that it can assume the responsibility of holding events and activities that relate to education. For that reason, the organizationÕs name has been changed to ÒEducation Committee of Hmong Community, Inc.Ó since the summer of 1997.

The mission of the Education Committee of Hmong Community, Inc. is to promote the education of the Hmong people in the Detroit metropolitan area at all levels through educational activities. The structure of the Committee consists of four Executives Board Members, one Hmong educator from each local school, and one youth representative from the community. Its responsibilities are to hold annual events such as:

Currently, there are approximately 1500 students enrolled in K-12 in the tri county public schools. Along with that, we have a total of thirty Hmong teachers, educational technicians, and tutors spread throughout the schools system helping these students to acquire English as their second language and in turn promoting them to become mainstream in the regular classrooms. It is the desire of the Education Committee of Hmong Community, Inc. to provide additional resources and assistance to these Hmong students and teachers in any way we can.
