Dyed Silk Yarn

This is what the final dyed, dried yarn looks like. It wouldn't be long before all this gets on the handloom to be weaved into beautiful sarees. The yarn at this stage is just waiting for its main decorative ornament - Jari, which is silk yarn twisted with a thin silver wire and then gilded with gold. While this dyed silk forms the main fabric of the saree, Jari forms the borders and designs. Jari is predominantly manufactured in Surat and surrounding cities in the state of Gujarat in north-western India. This Jari is procured by specialized Jari merchants and agents in Kanchipuram and is passed on to the weavers.
