28th April ... After a short drive from Tarragona we were in Salou.... BUT... we decided not to stay there as it looked a leeetle bit too much like the Gold Coast (high rise buildings, tourists in stupid tourist clothes and the like) and therefore would have been very expensive. The main attraction of this area of the Costa Daruda is (apart from the beach in summer) the theme park, sponsored by Universal Studios, 'Port Aventura' , whose huge twisty roller coaster we saw on teh drive. I was quite keen to go because I thought the rides looked quite good, but we didn't end up staying long enough... and our second day was pourin rain anyway. Well we drove on to Cambils teh same day, which is the next town down from Salou, and we found a small but costy and bright room in the Hotel Marinada. We had a bathroom, double beds and not much else (a croissant and juice for breakfast) for around 5,000 ptas. Not too bad as it was really the only place with any rooms available. Cambrilles is a pretty, lively port town with lots of tourists (mostly Spanish though as this was a long weekend... well actually Monday wasn't technically a holiday, but Tuesday was, so everyone was taking the extra day off.) and shops and restaraunts down by the port. We found an internet place (which doubled as a dirt bike hire shop amongst other things) which had bargain vouchers in the tourist information office. After doing the email thing we looked for food. Heaps of places, but nothing that looked really inspiring. We tried to find some clubs but most things don't until really late and we were too buggered to be bothered looking very hard. 29th April Not a good day. Cold and wet and we got lost trying to find the station and the office to return the car to. And when we did find the stupid hire car office (Europcar in Salou) it was closed for Sunday and the car park had a barrier up so we couldn't just leave the car. I phoned the company and she wasn't much help. The office in Tarragona was closed as well so we drove out to Reus airport which is this tiny little in the middle of nowhere... which was so busy that the staff at the one cafe and info booth were all sittin around having a coffee and a chat. The information lady was very helpful and phoned us a cab to go back to the train station and we left our beloved, noisy, diesel engined car at the airport. Talk about amazing cab service! 5 minutes later a black Mercedes shows up and we weren't even ready! It was the smoothest car ride ever... he was going down the highway at 140km or something ridiculous and we couldn't feel a thing, it was amazing! The ride cost us about 3000ptas but there was no other way of getting out of the airport (apart from by plane obviously). Salou train station was mega dodgy with winos sitting around all day and vomitting everywhere, noisy kids and dodgy backpackers as well. We got ourselves tickets to Tortosa which was a relatively short trip on a normal train with some pretty views of the coast and mountains.
