In my pages you will see me refer to ADD. That is not longer the proper term but it is the one I am comfortable with. I believe that now it is termed ADHD either WITH or WITHOUT hyperactivity. My daughter's and I all have ADHD/WO (mainly inattentive type)
In 1974 my oldest daughter (Tammy) was diagnosed with ADD. The actual diagnosis at the time was "minimal brain disfunction and hyper-activity" We put her on Ritalin but soon took her off. It didn't seem to be helping her but, we didn't even know what her problems really were so it was hard to tell if it was helping. She also had dyslexia and very poor vision which made learning even more difficult. In the 3rd grade she was put in a behavior problems class. Now, the child that had so much trouble concentrating, was in a class where children routinely threw chairs, got in fights and all manner of disruption. This was not a good situation for an ADD child but at the time it was the best the system had to offer. She now has 3 children of her own and does day care besides. NO, she has not outgrown her ADD, but she is now on Cylert and doing well with that in combo with therapy. ~~~~ In 1994 my youngest daughter (Faith) was diagnosed with ADD. By this time there was at least a small amount of information available as to what we were dealing with. She was put on Ritalin and is doing quite well on it although we are about to enter into some therapy as well. She continues to have problems relating to her peers and gets along much better with kids younger than herself or adults. *UPDATE* The end of April, Faith was switched to Adderal. We have seen some excellent changes. She had been having a problem with sleep disturbance. That is now quite diminished and she no longer has to leave the classroom to receive meds which is good. She also seems to be having an easier time when the meds are wearing off. The Ritalin seemed to produce a "drop off" effect, now the change is very gradual and she doesn't seem to "act out" as much during the transition. I have also begun to attend a class for the parents of ADHD kids (when I remember to go) at our local mental health clinic. I hope to learn some skills in dealing with our school system and how to advocate for my child. Especially where the "504" ruling is concerned. I want to know that my child is receiving the education that she is entitled to under the law. ~~~~ One year after Faith's diagnosis I finally agreed to be tested and what do you imagine the results were? Yes, there was a reason I had had so much trouble in school and in life in general. ~~~~ I think I have learned some pretty good coping skills, like always putting the keys in the same place and making sure the bills get put in the letter rack as soon as they come into the house. Oh, and PILES, I could not survive without my piles. Anything I know I'm going to need to do something with has to go in a pile. If I try to put it away somewhere it might as well disappear into a "black hole". Everything needs to be in plain sight if I ever intend to take care of it. ~~~~ My husband(Jim) does not have ADD. In fact, if there were a direct opposite of ADD, that would be him. He is the most relaxed and laid-back person I know. It adds a good balance to our home but I know that at times my daughter's and I must drive him to distraction. Speaking of which, one of the best books I have read on the subject of ADD is "Driven to Distraction" by Edward Hallowell and John Ratey, both M.D.'s. This book will give you insight into many aspects of ADD and how it affects not only the ADDer but those that deal with them. ~~~~ For Christmas of 1996 we decided to buy our daughter a computer (hoping to find SOMETHING that would hold her attention and be educational at the same time) and a whole new world opened up to us. Once we were connected to the World-Wide Web we discovered a wealth of information about this thing called ADD. On this page I would like to share some of the things I have found to be very informative or just plain entertaining. One of my favorite sayings that I found out here was "ADDult+ADDchild=ADDventure". I wish I could give credit where credit is due but I have no idea where I saw this or who said it first. I hope you will find something of interest to you in these links and that your ADD~venture is made better by it. ADD is not only survivable but can be quite interesting once you know what you are dealing with. ~~~~ I have an analogy of ADD that I sometimes use to try and describe ADD to my friends in a way they can relate to and it goes like this: Imagine you are getting ready to have company for dinner, you are cooking, cleaning and bathing the children. You go to the fridge to get something and for a minute you stand there and can't remember what you went for. This is what ADD is like, only it lasts all day, every day, you will always be doing 3 or 4 things (minimum) at once and some days you never do remember what you were doing. ~~~~ For anyone on AOL there are wonderful chats on ADD which you can locate under "keyword" OLP. I have found some of the most knowledgeable and helpful people in these chats. Everyone there is very supportive and some are extremely funny also. ADD on AOL - Main Menu Be sure to consider signing up on the mailing lists offered by Bob Seay at the Miningco site ADD@TheMiningco and Brandi Valentine. Brandi Valentine's Site on ADD I get both of these and have found them to contain many wonderful and useful ideas along with some humor.
