Well, Jev fiddled with the computer till after 11 last night, and ended up just shutting it off unrepaired in the end. He said I could tinker with it today and try to get it working. So, I tinkered, and I'm online getting mail right now, but woe to me if I reboot. Actually, it's not hard to get it working again, but it's annoying to jump through the hoops. It works, but it's not really fixed.
I can check mail though, and that's the thing I was most concerned about. Now I just need to convince the computer it has something better than a sixteen-color graphics card. Ack!

Ah... everything seems to be working! *knocking on wood* The problem child (modem) got relocated to com 3 (by Win95, apparently), the system reboots without locking up, and I have true color back. Hurrah!! Of course, the only programs installed are Eudora and AOL, but my web publishing stuff runs off a Zip disk, no setup required, so I'm content. I'll quit griping about computer-related stuff now.
Last night we didn't do much; we went out to a buffet dinner, dodging between raindrops from the car to the restaurant, and since we were both fairly well stuffed afterward, we only stopped at one small used bookstore, where I spent $16 on four books. I bought two by Morgan Llewellyn: Druids and Red Branch; then there's Silverlight,a collaboration with Morgan and Peter someoneorrother (too lazy to go look), which was the second in a series, and a trade paperback copy of Robin McKinley's The Hero and the Crown. Between those and what I brought with me, I should have plenty of reading material while I'm here.
Of course, since it was raining and we were stuffed, there were no nearby parking spaces when we got back to the townhouse. I didn't think I was really all that stuffed, so I told Jev I could make the walk. Otherwise, I'd have to stand out in the rain anyway, or pound on the door and hope Darrell heard and was able to get to the door to open it (he's about to go in for knee surgery, and has a big brace on one leg). I did make it back from the car, barely. Darrell and his nephew were down in the basement, playing games on the Playstation, but someone had left the bigscreen TV on, and Babylon 5 was on, so Jev and I sat down and watched, and I had a chance to catch my breath before the trek upstairs.
After the show, we came upstairs and Jev started tinkering with the computer shortly after eight. It was not cooperative, and like I said, he gave up some time after 11. We watched a game show on Comedy Central called "Win Ben Stein's Money", then curled up together and went to sleep.
I heard the alarm this morning, but ignored it since Jev turned it off. We were slow starters today, and I don't think he got out the door until about the time he was due at work. He says no one else shows up that early, so I leave it up to him to worry about what time he gets in.
I'm doing really good about not snacking or overeating so far, mostly because the kitchen is downstairs and I prefer to stay up here. The fact that we really don't have anything of the munchie variety helps, too. Maybe I will succeed in shedding a few pounds, after all. I'd be happy to get back to 120, bare. I was 126 yesterday morning, so it's a realistic goal. I'm most comfortable between 105 and 110, but I don't expect to lose that much without some serious exercise.
