late
I don't feel like I've really accomplished much today... I got my C++ compiler via UPS this afternoon and installed it and wrote a little "Hello World" program to get the feel for things. I did some hunting on the web, and ordered a couple books online -- one for the C++ class I hope to take soon, one on my compiler, and one just for fun, since it was discounted, and still cheaper than list price with the shipping for the third book. Better than if I'd bought it at Walden's or B. Dalton, and I won't likely get to one of those for a while anyway.
I did get out of the house for a bit, to Wal-Mart to get my pictures (which I had to give back to them so they could reprint the last few that were cut in the middle of the picture), and to Subway for lunch. Then I spent a good bit of the rest of the afternoon and evening chatting with Jev. He worked on some programming homework while I read newsgroups and surfed, then he went for a goof-off break and I took a bath and relaxed. We played backgammon for a bit after that, then he climbed up to his loft and we talked until he fell asleep.
We hadn't said goodnight just yet, so I went back and read more news, and posted a bit, all the while listening to him breathe. It was quite relaxing. Eventually, he woke himself up coughing a bit, and we said goodnight. I read a few more posts, then started some computer maintenence before getting settled in bed, where I am now.
There were some rather upsetting and disturbing postsin one newsgroup I read regularly, and I'm of two minds about the whole affair. The group is basically a warm and friendly support group, in the guise of a fairy tale type land, and the upsetting posts are about a ertain member of the group and accusations of his less-than-savory behavior. The group is essentially one big family, and as you may imagine, this has caused a great rift between certain members.
The initial posts about the matter were rather graphic, as well, which felt very out of place in the group. Certain parties wanted to sweep everything under the rug, and even move the whole conversation to a newsgroup that they claimed to be abandoned. Others (myself included) think it should stay IN the group, just perhaps limit it to a handful of clearly marked threads that can be avoided if some of us don't want to read about it. Whatever happens, I hope it doesn't shatter the group completely. Only time will tell...
And by the time, I should be soundly asleep! Goodnight!
