1:30AM 4-13-99 THE MEANING OF LIFE
A person may ask himself the question, “What is the meaning of life?”, and from himself he may receive an answer. He may ask someone else the same question and receive a different answer. For the answer to this question is as infinite as the personalities and opinions of every person who has ever existed.
Therefore it is a pointless question. The question that should be asked is, “What is the purpose of life?”. A question that is, at first, strikingly similar, but yet is far more relevant. Because in order to answer the first question, you must first answer this one.
It is more relevant because it only has one true answer. In order to find this answer you may refer to a quote from Marilyn Manson which says, “Without the threat of death there is no reason to live at all”.
What is the purpose of life? Why do we continue living with no end in sight? With no clear reason for out existence? The answer is simple.
We live so that we may not die. We cling to our existence and seek to perpetuate it by any means necessary. We live to live and not to die.
The purpose of life is to find a purpose. Unconsciously we seek our purpose until we find it, or until we die. Some search for love. Some wish to be loved. Some search for immortality. Some simply wish to die happy.
We all live in search of our purpose. Some find it early in life. Some never find it at all.
For those of us that do find our purpose we dedicate our lives to it. Everything else becomes secondary. Those who find their purpose follow it through to the end, and thus, give meaning to their lives.
To find a purpose in life is the purpose of life. And from that purpose we gain meaning.
It all comes down to one real question, “What will you do before you die?”.
