The King of Apatrapa

Nana Agyei-Bi Boamoanpong is the King of Apatrapa, a village in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, West Africa. The village of Apatrapa is located four hours away from Accra, the capital of Ghana.

The village of Apatrapa was founded by the great, great grand parents of Nana Agyei-Bi Boamoanpong several hundred years ago. Nana Agyei-Bi Boamoanpong is one of eleven children born on April 3, 1957 to Nana Yaw Asante, his father; and Akosua Achiaa, his mother. He was named Kojo Asante at birth.

His name was changed to Agyei-Bi Boamoanpong when he was enstooled a King in July, 1992. His first name was changed to Agyei-Bi, the first name of his grandfather on his father's side. His second name changed to Boamoanpong, the founder and the first chief of the village of Aatrapa.

Nana Agyei-Bi was enstooled seven years after the death of his great uncle, Nana Kwabena Badu. At age 33, Nana Agyei-Bi Boamoanpong became the youngest person ever to be enstooled a King in the village.

In the decision-making process to select a new King, the elders of his family held meetings. The candidates are not chosen from among the sons of the deceased King or Chief of the village but from among his uncles, his cousins on his mother's side, his brothers by the same mother, or his nephews who are the sons of his sisters. This is the matrilineal system of the Akan people.

In his eminent position, Nana Agyei-Bi Boamoanpong has moral, social, and political authority. He reconciles disputes, performs customary marriages, attends ancestral traditional events including baptisms and burial services.

The King pours libation at the beginning of every traditional event. This serves to reaffirm the historical links between the past and present, while at the same time reminding the ancestors of their duty to guide and protect their present-day descendants.

Nana Agyei-Bi Boamoanpong is an efficient link between the government and his people. Through his influence with the government, he is responsible for two recent undertakings:

  • One undertaking is the building of a Junior Secondary School in Apatrapa. The school was opened in January, 1998.
  • The second undertaking is the building of a paved road to Apatrapa by his uncle, Osei Owusu.
Nana Agyei-Bi Boamoanpong is providing a new dynamic to the mobilization of his village.
