Apatrapa Updates:

Clay Ovens

The first donors to contribute towards this project were:

  • Helen E. & Arthur R. Elcock
  • Diane & Gloria Toppin

The oven will be completed by July, 1998. Additional ovens are needed in order for the women to establish a bakery. This bakery will assist in self-sufficient economic development. If you would like to underwrite or contribute to the cost of an oven which is $350, please contact Dr. Beryl Dorsett

Vegetable Garden

During our visit in December, 1997, we learned that women who had multiple births were only able to nourish one infant due to the lack of a balanced nutritional diet. In each case, the second child died. The basic diet consists of meat, fish, and starchy foods. In March, 1998, women were introduced to the need for green vegetables. A donation of a variety of 30 different seeds to grow green and yellow vegetable including collard greens, peas, okra, kale, carrots, etc. was made. The women identified an area to plant these seeds so that they may be ready to harvest by July for a cooking demonstration.

Apatrapa Health Care Center

Contributions were received from members of NED and friends for this project. The following services are offered:

  1. Infant and Children
  2. Family Health
  3. Women's Health
  4. Education and Administration
A licensed physician was hired April, 1998. Dr. Azaare Nsoh is a Ghanaian resident in charge of the clinic. Other staff includes a nurse, midwife, and medical records clerk/receptionist. Medication and medical supplies valuing $4,000-$6,000 were received and will be taken to the village in July, 1998.

Water Wells

The first well was completed December 1997 and the second well was completed in March, 1998. The wells are located at opposite ends of the village. Clean water is now available at all times from both wells.
