Apatrapa Projects
The following projects were initiated by Dr. Beryl Dorsett (Nana Ama Serwah-Nyarko) in the village of Apatrapa.
- Water Well
- One water well was completed in December, 1997 and the second water well will be completed in March, 1998. The village has no reliable water source. Women previously walked miles to fetch water with their buckets on their head and babies on their back.
- School Bus
- A bus was purchased for the Dorsett Memorial School in July, 1997. Several trips are made each day to carry children to and from school. Children no longer have to walk miles to attend school.
- Sponsor a School Child Program
- The Dorsett Memorial School has more than 250 students. The tuition is $30 a year. A person who sponsors a child for one year will receive a picture of the child, a biographical sketch, a receipt, and thank you letter from the headmaster of the school. More than 150 students have been sponsored by American families. Educational supplies, books, and materials have been donated.
- Health Clinic Building
- There is no health facility in the village. A century old building in need of repair was identified as a location for the village clinic. Mary Singletary, Past President of the Rochester Club of NANBPWC, Inc. have initiated this project. Additional funding was received from the Northeast District, NANBPWC, Inc., Coona Cook, Governor.
- Medical Staff in Apatrapa
- A medical doctor, dentist, midwife, community workers, and medical records receptionist were interviewed and selected. Money was awarded from a grant to hire saff for the clinic for one year. The clinic will be housed at a temporary facility beginning March, 1998, until the permanent site is completed. The object of the proposal is to target infants and young school-age children who are in need of immunization and dental services; and provide women pre- and post-natal care.
- Women's Organization
- Apatrapa Women in Development organization was formed with an executive board of 12 women. The organization founded by Nana Ama Serwah-Nyarko, was registered at Ghana's Register General's office. The purpose of the organization is to create economic development projects. The women voiced a need to learn how to tye-dye, make beaded jewelry, and bake bread for commercial use.
