Depression usually has a physical component. Whether an imbalance in brain chemistry is the cause of depression or the other way around is unknown. Sometimes depression can be caused by purely physical diseases like hypothyroidism, so I recommend you start your healing process by getting a physical exam.

The more severe depressions are often treated with anti-depressant medications such as Prozac and Zoloft. These can be prescribed by a medical doctor or Psychiatrist.

If meds are not for you, there is an herbal remedy called St. John's Wort which is helpful for many people. Do NOT take St. John's Wort at the same time as prescription anti-depressants unless your doctor tells you it's okay!

Almost everyone can get some benefit from diet and exercize. 20 minutes of brisk walking daily is often enough to give some relief from depressive symptoms. A food plan that controls blood sugar can also be helpful for some people. I personally recommend The Zone diet.

Sometimes depression can be caused by Seasonal Affective Disorder or S.A.D. SAD can cause depression during the winter months when the days are shorter. It can be treated by light therapy in a doctors office or sometimes by getting 20 minutes of sunlight in the morning and/or evening.
