What to do and what NOT to do
I am taking the "do-NOTs" first because they are so much more important. Those are the two most importand "do-Nots". Other than filtering your mail, which does nothing to actually stop spammers, there are a few things you can do that will help stop them.
- Never ever ever respond to an unsolicited mail! This will make the spammer's day because you confirm that your e-mail address is active and in use. And then they will just happily keep spamming you. That is all replying does. Sometimes it says to reply if you want to be removed from a list, only do this if you know it is something you have subscribed to at some point.
- Never ever forward ICQ messages about how ICQ is checking their active users and if you don't forward your account will be terminated or how ICQ is going to start charging for their program. If ICQ wanted to do either of above they would send out system messages or e-mails. This is a fact!
These are just a few examples. Visit the sites in my links list below to get more information and ideas about this.
- Most ISPs have a strong anti-spam policy. If you send them a report about the spammed mails you have received, they can ban and sue that user of theirs. You can do this at SpamCop among other places.
- Join the Coalition Against Unsolicitated Commercial Email. They actively fight spam by pushing legislations in the United States (and soon other countries).
