Plate March On
by Comrade Hemmingway, Official Football or Death Reporter

Avon Plate notched up their second consecutive win this Sunday and did it in some style. For a twenty minute period in the first half, Plate had the sun on their backs and were playing the type of fluid football they have been threatening to play for so long. All over the pitch players were willing to pass and move and when presented with the opportunity to run at defenders they grabbed it with both hands keeping their traveling army of fans well entertained.

After hitting a post in the first minute Wanderers were pegged back and for the first 45 minutes their only hope was desperation defending. For a while it seemed like their luck might hold out. Time and again the Plate's wonderful build up play led to nothing as the ball fell unkindly in the box or chances were blasted wide, but finally justice was done, Jacko laying the ball off to Yos on the edge of the box who finished low to the keepers left. Relaxed by the goal Plate kept up their possession football seemingly winning every midfield scrap. It was no surprise then that with 5 minutes left in the half Jacko beat the offside trap to make it 2-0

Half Time 0:2

The second half could not have started better for the Plate. Within seconds they forced a corner. The ball, played to the back post was hooked back in over the keeper for Yos to score the simplest of headers. The scene looked set for a second half stroll but to their credit Wizard Wanderers wouldn't die and straight from the kick off they caught Plate napping, an early ball catching the defenders flat and allowing the striker to race through and lob Bill.

Suddenly Wizards sensed they might get lucky and their confidence was rewarded with a second goal minutes later, an ambitious shot creeping past Bill at the near post. Alarm bells started ringing and the Plate responded by once again raising their game. With the hour approaching Wizard's keepers clearance was charged down and only a defenders outstretched arm could block Yos' snapshot. Tony Bowles stepped up and casually made it 4:2.

By now the game should have been done and dusted but once again Plate let the opposition back into the match, this time with a classic piece of farce as Bill miscontrolled Tom's backpass allowing the ball to roll agonizingly into the unguarded net. Despite this the overall superiority of the Plate was never in doubt and this was proven in the final quarter when two more goals were added. The first a sharp finish from Jack after a delightful lobbed pass from Chris Thomas. The second a typical Bowlsey finish after a marvelous run from the ever influential Damien Butt had taken him passed what seemed like the entire Wanderers defence.

When the final whistle went the traveling Plate fans (who outnumbered the home support by at least three to one) left for home not only entertained but in the back of their minds thinking, just a little, of promotion.
