Mrs Catherine Ann Henwood nee Nicholls (1839-1938)

    The death occurred yesterday at her home in Massey Road, Mangere, of one of Auckland's oldest settlers, Mrs Catherine Ann Henwood, in her 100th year. Mrs Henwood, who celebrated her 99th birthday on May 8, was born in Cornwall, and came to New Zealand with her parents, the late Mr and Mrs Nicolls, in the ship Bank of England when she was 16 years of age, the family being one of the first to settle in the Parnell district.
    At the age of 18, Mrs Henwood married Mr Thomas Henwood. They lived for 2 years at Matakana and then moved to the Mangere district, where they built their home. Following the death of her husband in 1878, Mrs Henwood carried on the management of the farm, assisted by her sons. She milked a portion of the herd of cows until she was 80 years of age.

    One of Auckland's oldest settlers, Mrs Catherine Ann Henwood, has died at her home, Massey Road, Mangere, in her hundreth year. She was born in Cornwall, England, and celebrated her 99th birthday on March 8.

    Mrs Henwood came to New Zealand with her parents, the late Mr and Mrs William Nicolls, in the ship Bank of England when she was 16 years of age. The family was amongst the first to settle in the Parnell district. Mrs Henwood was 18 when she married Mr Thomas Henwood, and for two years they lived at Matakana. Later they moved to Mangere, and built their permanent home. Following the death of her husband in 1878, Mrs Henwood carried on the management of the farm, assisted by her sons. She milked a portion of the dairy herd until she was 80 years of age

Note: The discrepancy in her birthday and where she and Thomas first lived reflect the wording in 2 newspaper articles, and is not a typing mistake. Other discrepancies in place name and spellings of surnames have been removed with the local knowledge of Lynda Pomeroy


Mrs Emma Vercoe nee Henwood (1843-1928)

    Mrs Emma Vercoe

    The death occurred at Birkenhead yesterday of Mrs Emma Vercoe, aged 85, well known in the Helensville district, where her husband, the late Mr Richard James Vercoe, was a farmer. Mr Vercoe, who was born at sea in 1842, and came to Auckland at the age of 5 years, was a prominent member of the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows, which he joined when 18 years old, and at the time of his death at Grey Lynn, five years ago, was the oldest member of the Fountain of Friendship Lodge. Mrs Vercoe was the third daughter of the late Mr Thomas Henwood, of Mangere, being born on March 23 1843 at St Teath, Cornwall, England, and she came to Auckland in 1857 in the ship Joseph Fletcher. She is survived by a family of nine, and there are 38 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. The sons are Mr James Vercoe, of Te Pue (need to check if this should read Te Puke?), Mr Richard Vercoe, of Birkenhead, Mr Charles Vercoe, of Mount Helen, and Mr John Vercoe, of Helensville. The daughters are Mrs Frederick Walker, of Wanganui Avenue, Herne Bay, Mrs W.R. Entwistle, of Marara (need to check if this should read Marama) Terrace, Birkenhead, Mrs Henry McIntosh, of Takanini, Mrs A Moncur of Great South Road, and Mrs J Bradley, of Helensville.
