Had Tiberius been a cat....from Poor Matthias....Matthew Arnold(1822-1888)

Observe the Cat upon this page.
Philosophers in every age.
The very wisest of the wise.
Have tried her mind to analyze
In vain, for nothing can they learn.
She baffles them at every turn
Like Mister Hamlet in the play.
She leads their reasoning astray;
She feigns and interest in string
Or yarn or any rolling thing.
Unlike the Dog, she does not care
With common Man her thoughts
to share.
She teaches us that in life's walk
'T is better to others talk,
And listen while they say instead
The foolish things we might
have said........from A CHILD'S PRIMER FOR NATURAL
HISTORY....Oliver Herford (1863-1935)
She was playing with her cat,
Marvelous it was to see,
Hands and paws, tit for tat,
In the gloom so playfully.
One was hiding-then a pause!
'Neath her mittens, finely made,
Gleamed the agate-pointed claws,
Keener than a razor's blade.
then the cat more tender grew,
And its steel-like claws withdrew.
But the devil watched with care...
And the dimly lighted room
Heard her laugh that circled where
Four bright eyeballs cut the gloom.....from WOMAN AND CAT...Paul Verlaine
(1844-1869)
I am a very old pussy,
My name is Tabitha Jane;
I have had about fifty kittens,
So I think I mustn't complain...
Now I think I've a right,
being aged,
To take a tabby's repose;
To have a good breakfast and
dinner,
And to sit by the fire and doze.
I don't care much for the people
Who are living with me in
this house,
But I own that I love a good fire,
And occasional herring
and mouse...
from AN OLD CAT'S CONFESSIONS.....C.L.Cranch (1813-1892)
Mohammed, the founder of Islam, had a favorite cat named Muezza. Legend has it that one night Meuzza was sleeping next to Mohammed, and upon awakening, the prophet realized that the cat was asleep on his sleeve. Rather than disturb the cat, Mohammed cut off that part of his garment, whilst Meuzza continued to sleep. The prophet and his cat had great respect for one another! It is also said that the M marking on a tabbies' forehead is in honor of Mohammed!
