You are very correct in the fact that their are many factors which contribute
to abusive personalities. I just made a broad comment. (Kinda going with
the odds, so to say)

Subject: Issues with Ste....
Interesting point to bring up about Ste. I don't think he's a confused
straight boy. I think it could happen, absolutely, and it probably has
happened. But I don't think it's happening here. Ste has a wide circle
of friends from whom he gets love and lots of attention -- the kind of
love you were talking about, I think, where men feel a deep bond of
friendship that is non-sexual. Considering he has such a wide circle of
friends, I don't think he would get confused about his sexuality bc of
Jaime's advances. If he were str8, I think he'd realize what was going
on, and think, well, my mates don't act like this, so what's up? So I
think he is gay. And besides, it would ruin the charm of the story, huh?
About the statistics about people being abusers after being abused,
well, a lot of people gew up and didn't become abusive. Depending on who
you ask and how you manipulate the numbers, statistics can mean anything.

Ok.....First thing is to ask your local computing services department,
which is what's providing your e-mail acoount, I gather? about what news
services they provide....they should be able to get you started. Onceyou
do that, ask them to add alt.movies.beautiful-thing to their list of
news-groups carried, if it's not already there. Then...enjoy it!:-)

I recently contacted the DejaNews news-group archiving service about
carrying the news-group alt.movies.beautiful-thing, and was told that the
news-groups they carried were dependant on those provided by their news
feed...which is provided by jump.net. This would provide a valuble service
to a group of people all over the world who are trying to connect, but
having difficulty accessing this group.
The following was the original letter to DejaNews.
On behalf of many fans of the movie Beautiful Thing who would like to
use the DejaNews service to follow the alt.movies.beautiful-thing group,
is it possible you could add it to the list of groups you index?
We are attempting to get this news-group off the ground as a viable
alternative to an e-mail list that is simply getting out of hand
volume-wise, however, many list members are finding it difficult to obtain
through their ISP's. It is our hope that making it available through a
public news service such as Deja-News will make it more readily available
to the public that wants it so desperately.
I'd like to thank you in advance for adding it to your database.
Tory

We'd be most grateful if you would add alt.movies.beautiful-thing to your
newsfeed so that we can all stay in touch and share our mutual enjoyment
of this wonderful film.
Sincerely, Tory

Monday and Tuesday saw a major system crash here which required a complete
reinstallation of Operating System, core services, and applications.
Operation of the email server may have caused some list subscribers to
receive weird emails. Others will have noticed a loss of service.
Right now as far as I can tell the mail server has been rebuilt
successfully.
Some join/leave requests may not have been handled. If you suspect this
has
affected you, retry the operation.

Subject: Email-list
BT friends,
Obviously the list is having some technical difficulties. I feel strongly
that the BT list should have a digest option and be housed on a reliable
server. I don't really care WHO'S server it's on or WHO manages it, so long
as it is reliable and managed sensitively and responsibly.
One thing I do NOT want is to "split" the list. I have not taken any steps
to unilaterally create an alternate BT list because a) I haven't heard
directly from Davie (who I'm sure is working his butt off right now) and b)
I haven't heard from that many of you folks about how you want to handle
this situation.
(Thanks to those who contacted me but in the future, please "Cc" to the
whole group. [If you don't want to be in on this discussion, respond to
the group asking to be removed from the Cc: field]).
I feel I should point out that so far those of us on the BT list have
enjoyed something at Davie's expense. On the web it is very easy to feel
that things like the BT list are "free". Well, that's never exactly
accurate. Everything costs someone something. Davie puts many hours of time
and trouble into the web site, the list, and a host of other projects all
geared to enhance our continued enjoyment of BT. Of course he'd like to
make some money off this somehow -- and I think he should -- but I doubt he
has made any so far. He's probably putting his own money into this, not to
mention his time which is worth a lot. So far it has been a labor of love.
If we move the list to a commercial server, however, SOMEONE will have to
pay for it -- they won't do it for love. The volume of mail generated by
the list is fairly high. (Anyone want to hazard a guess? I saved this past
week's posts and they total 650K.) This means band width and WORK for the
machine and program handling it. All this means $ or £ in hardware, web
access, software, programming and maintenance time, etc. etc. etc.
So far Davie has heroically carried this burden all by himself! And thus we
all owe him an enormous THANK YOU for having made the BT list possible.
The question is, what are we going to do now?? We have something here.
Davie has provided the opportunity but WE have made it happen through our
participation. We've found something of value here not only as fans of a
film but as people learning from and sharing with one another. Hey, it
doesn't get much better than this, in my opinion.
As I said, if we were to set up the list on my ISP's server, I could foot
the bill to get it started, but there would come a point where I would no
longer be able or willing to do that. I'd have to post to the list asking
for donations to cover the costs. If there wasn't sufficient support from
the BT list community to continue it, the BT list would then die.
Although he hasn't said so directly, I believe this is Davie's worst fear
and the primary reason he is trying to find alternatives (such as the
news-group) to putting the list up on a commercial server.
Sirius.com (http://www.sirius.com/lists/services/), for example, charges a
flat rate of $5 per list per month, as long as the list remains below the
volume threshold of 100 megabytes a month. The Digest option counts as a
second list which costs an additional $5 per month -- $120 a year total.
Lists are billed $20 a month for each month in which they go over the 100
megabyte threshold. Since the Digest option is a second list, that would
cost an additional $20 per month. "List volume is calculated by multiplying
the number of subscribers by the size of the messages that go to the list.
For example, a 1 kilobyte message sent to a list with 50 subscribers
multiplies to a volume of 50 kilobytes of mail generated."
Someone help me with the math here. If the list generates 650K a week PER
SUBSCRIBER (more or less) what does that work out to per month with 50,
100, 200 subscribers? Will the BT list go over the 100 megabyte per month
threshold?
Is there sufficient interest here to actually PAY for this service we are
using?? I would be willing to chip in $5 a month for one year (in advance)
to see this list keep operating. If there are eight other people willing to
make this commitment we at least know that putting the BT list on a
commercial server is an option even at high vollume. Without this
committment, it is risky.
Even so, however, out of respect for Davie and because I do not want to
split the list by having some of us subscribed to one while others are
subscribed to another, I would not advise anyone proceeding without Davie's
support and guidance in this matter.
How say you Davie??? Everyone????
Thanks for your time and attention.
Mike

Hi All,
Sometimes when you see a film, there are all kinds of errors, often ones of
continuity. BT has a very LOW content of these. In fact there's only two
that I'm sure are (slight) errors.
I don't think there are any obvious ones. Usually (in most films) these
involve wardrobe, jewelry, props that appear and reappear -- due to
intercutting different takes. Perhaps because the film was shot so quickly,
there was no time for lots of takes or bad memories about what props had
been set where.
Anyone spot any? This is all in fun, mind you.

Well, yeah. I´ve spotted a few. But only in the Spanish version of the movie
since it´s full screen and you can see more (especially at the bottom of the
screen).
One of them is really annoying, you know. It happens when Jamie has just
kissed Ste and Ste asks him: "D´you think I´m queer?" Well, in all the shots
from that perspective a black microphone can be seen practically under
Scott´s chin. It gets me soooo nervous...
And about mikes, WOW, I´ve seen them black, metallic, even hairy ones. I´m
serious. When Jamie, Ste and Sandra (not me, I wish... oh, never mind!), are
helping Leah down the railings and Jamie says "Ste, she knows" there´s an
enormous hairy mike (it reminded me of a megabrush) which can also be seen
when Leah says to Sandra she´s going out with Ste and Jamie and she turns
around and asks: "the Gloucester?" BOUM! Linda even looks at it. Watch
carefully and when you see her looking down, she´s looking at the mike.
OH, and the feet. I have a couple about them. When Jamie goes out to the
terrace to join Ste, Tony, Leah and Sandra he wears his trainers. BUT, when
he takes Ste´s clothes in the bathroom, he´s clearly barefoot; and he´s also
barefoot when he fights with his mum.
And the last one occurs when Tony goes out to comfort Sandra after Jamie´s
return from the Gloucester, he´s wearing brown socks, but when they all help
Leah down, he´s barefoot.
But I love it all the more for it, don´t you?

To Kevin. You´re RIGHT!!
When I first saw Scott leaning with Glen over the railings (the picture
where they´re smiling) I thought he could be Chris O´Donnell´s younger
brother. (sigh) Well, as Mama Cass would say, 'I can dream, can´t I'?
Thank you all and take care.

Sandra.

When Ste and Jamie were at the party. ( Around the time that Leah is tring

Ste then quickly looks at Jamie. (Almost as if, wondering if he was caught

Tony,
Is this the same show we hear when Jamie's ironing his shirt as he
talks to Sandra and Louise? The same show is on the tele in Ste's flat just
before he irons his shirt as well. You can hear the moderator of the show
saying something about "Now it's time to ride the bucking bronco."

I have a theory (that is partly based on personal experience) and here it
goes!!

I think that Ste is straight!! <Do not send hate mail or delete this yet ---
hear me out!!> However, just because someone is straight does not mean that
they cannot love someone of the same sex. Someone mentioned in a posting
that love is blind and Ste and Jamie are soul mates!!! This is what I mean.
I do not think that Ste would be attracted to another guy other than Jamie.
(Remember, he even hated going to the Gluocester) Now this does not
diminish his love, contrary his love is very intense. He was faced with
temptation from the girl at the party but turned her down. I think that if
something was to happened to Jamie that he would date girls but until that
happens, he will be dedicated to Jamie. Ste made this quite clear when they
dance in the finale. He is saying "this is who I love and this is who I am
going to be with and I do not care what anybody thinks.....!! I love Jamie
!! "
