Actually, it doesn't. Ste's bedroom has the door on one end of the room.
Leah's door is opposite her windows, more like Sandra's.

Well, there is nothing definate said about either parent and what really
happened to them. I know it has been speculated about, but neither play nor
movie says specifically what happened or where they are at the time of the
play. Ive read someone speculate that perhaps Ste's mom died and Trevor may
blame Ste and thats why he is abusive which I think is an interesting concept.
I cant imagine that his mom would be alive and allow him to be with his dad. Of
course there are lots of things that go on in this world that I cant imagine but
actually do! Anywho!
Once again, my 2 cents may not amount to much, but there it is!

It probably all had to do with filming. Which rooms worked best for each scene
and not really any conscience effort on behalf of the director to make it as
described in the play. When you use already existing 'sets' and not ones
constructed on a soundstage, I would think that you just have to make do with
what you have. It seems like they were just trying to find 3 flats together in
Themeasmede (I never can remember how to spell that!) so that they could get
real life shots and not from a soundstage. I really dont think that there was
any discussion on who should be in which room and why. The larger room probably
just worked better cinematographically (is that a word??) to be Jamies.

One other quick thought on this. We can also asume that Jamie doesnt
know his dad since he asks Sandra if he looks like his dad. To which
she replys the no, you look like me...so we can surmise that Jamie bears
no resemblance to his dad, that is if you believe Sandra. She later
lies to him about how she found out he went to the Gloucester (another
one I never can remember how to spell) so is she being truthful here or
just trying to spare his feelings. It would be interesting to speculate
about Jamie trying to find his dad one day, but im not the writer in the
family!

Oh yeah, first things first-- your opinions are always worth a lot (LOT)
more than two cents, and I'm always glad to read them-- so there!
Second thing: Actually, the line from the Screenplay (watch, with my
luck, maybe Glen altered the words onscreen) is "Am I like my dad?", to
which Sandra replies "No. You're like me." Since this comes after
Jamie wised off to Sandra (real mean-spiritedly; it is in some ways
his least admirable moment and shows us a bit of Jamie's anger and use
of words as his preferred weapons), and physically fought back (hit a
*woman*!), I thought the exchange was more a discussion of Jamie's
behavior than his appearance. Since he just finished referring to how
"that bloke o' yours beat [Sandra] up", I had thought he was asking if
he, Jamie, also had in him the tendency to be physically abusive. This
of course surmises that the aforementioned "bloke" was also Jamie's dad,
even though the "bloke" could've simply been one of Sandra's previous
boyfriends. Even so, I think it's not his looks he is comparing to his
dad's.
> She later

I think her later lie comes out easier (and she spares herself guilt by
lying), whereas here, in the full throes of such raw emotion, she is
more likely to be telling the honest truth, especially because (sparing
of Jamie's emotions or not), it reflects badly on her. And there
aren't many instances when Sandra ignores an opportunity to let people
know how good a mother she has been to Jamie! (But there is no way to
*know* the answer, of course).

Hi!
My name is Adam. I'm 29, and I live in Virginia (USA for those of you in
other areas of the world). I first found out about the movie BT last June
or July when it came on American Pay Per View Television. Soon thereafter,
I wandered onto the website, and then, onto the DALnet IRC channel. The
movie left upon me, as it has so many others, a profound effect.
It was my pleasure to come to London in October, 1997, and meet some of the
most die-hard supporters of all things BT. I've chatted with so many people
extensively, and it was in making their virtual acquaintance that I felt
renewed with a restored faith in the innate goodness of others. My mate of
eleven years was completely in awe that such a varied and unique group of
people could come together and have such a fast friendship.
I've never really posted properly to the list, but I've noticed lately that
there are a tidal wave of newcomers. Now that's a truly beautiful thing.
It's nice to know that the film is still spawning new friendships and
continued discussion. BT is like an old friend whom you find yourself
checking in on from time to time over the years. I hope that never changes.
My main purpose for writing this message is to say hello to some beautiful
things in their own right, Chris B., Chris C., Martijn, Andre, Marc, Gavin
K., Erik(s), Robert, Joe (the absent), Eric, and Jeff. I think of each of
you with a smile always.

Actually, with all due respect, I don't think most Americans think about
Canada. But that could just be me. I think it's a sovereign nation like
all the rest. (Even the microdots that don't deserve to be sovereign
countries.) Of course, if Canada falls apart, we'd gladly accept the
oil-rich Prairie Provinces and Ontario. And the Atlantic Provinces can join
Mississippi and the other poor U.S. states. Heck, Toronto would be a nice,
big, AMERICAN city.
But I am a bit off topic.

How things have changed - from the other end of the world.
Twenty years ago (24 June 1978) in Sydney (Australia) there was street march of
a few thousand souls. The occasion was the Day of International Gay
Solidarity. The march was attacked by the police, broken up and 53 people
arrested. This year (1998) the same march has become the Gay and Lesbian Mardi
Gras Parade and was watched by over 500,000 people. Marching in the parade was
a large group of Police Officers. They were applauded by the crowd.
And as another sign of the times:
Strange occurrence in the City of Sydney.
This afternoon I was walking along Oxford Street (the centre of gay life in
Sydney). I passed the Stonewall Hotel (no prizes for guessing what that's named
after) and inside I beheld a drag queen, tastefully dressed as Playboy bunny.
Then I heard her words:
'Don't worry, you can still win. Eyes down. Eight two, eighty two...'
I can hardly believe it - bingo in a gay pub. At last somewhere Leahs' mum
would be comfortable.

Hi Tory!
Mea culpa, Tory-- I boo-boo'd big time!
Since I helped contribute to this confusion, maybe I can help clear it
up. When I wrote in reply to Michael-Many-Personas :), I was referring
to the Screenplay, as I always do when trying to quote dialogue
accurately. As a result, my focus was on the stage directions, as
presented in the Screenplay. They are similar to the those in the
playscript, which I also had at hand-- in both instances, the directions
indicate that Jamie either "starts to hit back...He kicks" (BT
Screenplay, page 42) or "he hits back. They fight like cat and dog..."
(BT Play Script, page 35) Had I done the right thing and pop the tape
in (but I was already online and, well, you know... LAZY!! :)), I could
have confirmed that, even though the line reading *is* "how am I like my
dad", there is NO instance of Jamie actually striking, or even raising a
hand (as if to strike a blow) to, Sandra. Throughout, Jamie either
holds his arms/hand/fists defensively about his head, or, in his only
active part of this fight, holds Sandra's wrists up as he pushes her
away, and she lands on the living room chair. My previous
interpretation needs a revision! Although I still say he may be
comparing himself to his father in that he is-- if not physically
abusive-- at least verbally cruel to his mother (and, yes, cutting
remarks slice in both directions between this Mother and Son); he
definitely could not, given the evidence of the scene, be thinking he
would be the type to "beat on" a woman-- or, for that matter, any
person. Which certainly seems more true to his character as played in
the rest of the film. Jamie is more a lover than a fighter!
But this still raises the issue of what that line (about being like his
dad) may be *intended* to convey. I repeat Tory's query: any
opinions? Also, a question for those (like Michael/MGB) who have seen
the play, especiallly those who have been to it a *number* of times (Hi,
Jay P.! :)) : Does the director of the play there (or in Sydney--
Michael D., if you're here! or maybe Peter M. can fill us in about his
Edinburgh BT ...) have Jamie fight back, *hit* back, as the directions
indicate? And (last question today, I promise! :)) does/did that
affect the meaning given to the "Am I like my dad" line any?
I now imitate my dear friend, Sandra (who writes the following about
herself, not about me), and say what you're doubtless thinking: SHUT

The Chicago production is quite physical at that point as they really throwdown
and roll around on the stage! In fact in the first show I saw, someone had
priviously broken one of the globes covering the light by a door (the door was
slammed earlier causing the globe to fall) and there was glass on stage making
the scene rather dangerous for the actors. They are both tusseling pretty
hard. I never really thought of Jamie's remark in reference to the fight that
just occurred and they had just been talking about the former boyfriend
physically abusing Sandra. But if he is more like his mom, she is quite a
tigress too!
MGB whose thoughts have now risen to the obsenly cost of 3 cents each!

Hi all you Beautifull Things
I have just been mailed by Peter about the performances at the
Wellington Hotel in Birmingham.
He Said
Yes, the shows are on Wed and Thurs, 5th/6th August, at 8pm in the
Wellington Hotel (well pub) on Bristol St, Birmingham, opposite the
dome nightclub. Simply a pre-Edinburgh show in the intimacy of a pub
backroom, therefore the set has had to be cut down a little (as has
the stage space - watch the actors fall over each other - only
kidding!) Tickets cost 5 pounds, and will be on sale on the door.
As I work in Birmingham during the week Im definatly going, I was just
wondering if any one else is planning to go. Perhaps we could meet up peter
has said that he may be able to hold tickets at the door if I want

As the divine (tho slightly schitzo) Chichi has said, Jamie does slap
Sandra back in the Chicago production. In fact, the slap is so loud, you
are stunned that he has hit her so hard. At the end of the fight, I think
Jamie is quite ashamed of himself. He loves his mother, and he knows his
sharp tongue and the fighting were bang out of order. I think that's why he
asks if he's like his Dad.

Hey Jamie, and hello all.
Sorry it's taken a while to respond to this email, but i've been busy
working.
Jamie, some advice, if it helps or not.
I'm sure that a person with our whit and charm, and looks will get a bf,
sooner, than later. I feel that there must be hundreds if not, half the
amount of students at school, who are gay, but haven't let the cat out of
the bag, so to speak. I was wondering if you'd checked out the clubs and
event that the school holds, and whether there was a lgb (lesbian gay and
Bisexual) society within your school ? or outside, locally to you.
This would benefit both yourself, and them. As there may be others who
are gay, but haven't told anyone, and have joined a society such as the
lgb. Usually you can find out if these societies exist or not, through a
local paper, or from word of mouth.
If all goes according to plan, you'll be joining a club/society in no
time!!
If however there isn't one in your school/area, then why not find some
people who are also gay, and forming your own society, and get approval
from an organisation like stonewall.
I remember my days at school. Unfortunately I wasn't aware of society in
full. When I was 16 I was kept inside, because of my mental age, being 12
at that time, and it affected my studies and my social life. I wasn't
good at sports, I was small for my age, and I had problems learning to
read and write and do simple arithmetic. I didn't even know about being
gay, and was being called it, at school, and i didn't understand. One
thing which hit me by surprise was that the way i spoke, which was well
spoken english, and also the pitch of my voice, which was high at that
time, made them believe I was gay, and I wasn't, at that time. Unreal
isn't it, but it's true, I tell you.
Today I understand fully what it's all about, and wish I could have turned
back the clocks, and been a bit more mature, but it's not possible.
To you, I wish you every success, and anyone else.
with reguards.

Hi everyone,
Well I have bitten the bullet, and booked up to see the BT play in Chicago
this Friday. I have got accomodation and
my bus ticket. I have just a few questions for those who have been already,
or know the Chicago area.
How long does it take on the L to get from Harrison to Belmont. (Red line)
How late does the that line run? Is it
fairly safe?
An alternative (according to the theatre answering machine) is the 770 bus,
which actually goes to the Theater Building
where does it run to? Any idea of its schedule (timetable) or where I can
find out?
I know downtown Chicago fairly well, but have not ventured that far north
before.
Thanks in advance,
Brian.

Hi Stu!
My school have a LGB society! No bloody way! All the teachers are
homophobic and it is a shit hole! As for local groups, well i went to
one once but it was 20 minutes away by train, cost me a fortune to get
there and wasn't really worth it. It would be great to set one up, but
almost impossible... no where to have it, no one to come etc! The
nearest thing to a gay meeting place around here is the toilets up the
road and no way am i going there!! i wish i lived in london or
something. Thanks for your help though Stu, sounds like you had an even
worse time at school than i do.
Loads of love and hopefully speak to you again soon,
jamie

It's good to hear about anglo Quebec. I'm one of those staunch Anglo-Saxon
types too. And I remember the Quebec Crisis too, both of them. There was
another one back in the '60's but we didn't have Martial Law. The first
one, I was involved in as a member of Military Intelligence with the Royal
Canadian Navy. Like the last time, in the 60's, if there was to be any
real problem, we were told that we could call on the 125000 US Marines who
were at the border, in and around Derby Line/Rock Island. Sort of scares
on to think of all those marines but so many of them are so damn cute. I
guess that's what I liked so much about the navy, all those cute young
things in their tight white bell bottoms. I was lucky enough to be a
Lieutenant RCN(X)NVR. There was never any shortage of cuties trying to
make a hit with the officers.
Bad, I know but I loved every minute of it.

I talked about is with Martijn. I've got the movie and i am trying to find the
dutch subtitled version. The effect it had on me was that it was the first movie
about gay-people i realy liked. 2 weeks ago i was in the gloucester and i made
some fotographs overthere. I hope i can publish them on my homepage. :-) i have
to convert my homepage in english. but that's not a real problem.
Oh! i found out about the movie when 2 friens of mine talked about is. I haven't
seen in in the theatre but i had to have that movie as soon as it was imported
in holland.
If you have more questions, just ask them.
How did you find out about the movie and what effect did it have on you?

I found out about BT from a friend in Sydney Australia. He saw a preview
screening of it in a cinema and told me about it later. I checked it out in
the internet and became a fan without even seeing it. I did of course see
it on video about 12 months later. What a wait!!! I became fanatical about
it because it made me feel really good inside. As many people have said on
this list before, I wish I'd had a similar experience of finding love at
that age.

How old are you? (if i may ask that?) :-)
I'm 27 years old. I'm glad my parents didn't find it I am gay at that age

I'm sorry, I am in silly mood today. I take it, truth, justice and the
American way prevailed and it was thrown out.

Well it keeps them off the streets... My favourite commercials are the ones
for the Psychic networks. Believe me, us Brits (and other aliens), are
really missing out on this one :) The first time I saw one I thought it
was some kind of satire. But no its for real, these people come on and tell
you how there psychic solved all there problems, and predicted when they
would meet the person of their dreams. Sometimes its in chat show format
and boy, does the host get excited... Its all very sad really, but hilarious.
God bless America is all I can say.
Always look on the bright side of life...
Brian. (whose off to get his free 10 minutes with his very own psychic...)
P.S. I don't want to offend any Americans out there, I really quite like it
here. Us Brits, are as "crazy as all get out" (as one American writer put it
and he liked the place) as well in our own way. But you got to laugh eh?

Hi everyone. I know sharisse and I haven't written in a while, but I

In reference to the comment that Americans like to sue, I know for a

My father and brother are both lawyers (and I am NOT) and they know all
about lawsuits. A client once sued my father for $1 billion for no good
reason. People are also suing a man for reporting the Monica Lewinski
scandal and others. Lawsuits are everywhere and all you have to do in
Indiana is watch TV for half an hour and you can take your pick of
lawyers from three or four commercials. I don't like the fact that we
sue so much. It's a sorry state. There can only be more lawsuits. At
my brother's law school gaduation there were over 300 people who
graduated law school. In one school alone. scary thought.

I picked up a tiny book today called "501 Great Things About Being
Gay." They
are actually quite amusing, and in most cases, true. If anyone would like, I
could post 1 or 2 every day to the list, just for S&G's. Let me know.

Hi all (and Another big Hi! to all the newcomers - there are so many, I might
leave a name out)
Personally, I wouldn't mind! I'd actually enjoy it. But what you the others
think?
