Portraits of Dee

Another of my Favorite Songs

In Alan Jay Lerner's and Frederick Loewe's "Camelot", they included a song which I've quoted any number of times in Usenet postings and e-mail -- as it has an important point to make about relationships with our significant others. In the story, King Arthur is at a loss, because he recognizes that he has no experience with women, and he needs to convince Guinevere that she should support Launcelot. (Arthur, you fool... Don't you know what's going to happen?) As Arthur ponders what he must do, he remembers a conversation with Merlin, which contains what he needs to know.

How to Handle A Woman

"How to handle a woman?
There's a way," said the wise old man,
"A way known by ev'ry woman
Since the whole rigmarole began."

"Do I flatter her?" I begged him answer.
"Do I threaten or cajole or plead?
Do I brood or play the gay romancer?"
Said he, smiling: "No indeed.

How to handle a woman?
Mark me well, I will tell you, sir:
The way to handle a woman
Is to love her...simply love her...
Merely love her...love her...love her."
