Meditation is a discipline practised throughout many cultures in various forms. I was formaly introduced to meditation in my first yoga class.
Taking a few minutes each day to relax and focus is very rewarding. It is toted in many articles as a way to help cope with stress and to promote general health. Don't get me wrong, meditation won't cure all your problems and make you rich and famous. It does, however, give you tools that help you in everyday life.
Presently, I'm trying to encorporate meditation in my daily routine to help me gain more focus in my daily life. It is also an invaluable tool in my spiritual journey of empowerment and self-discovery.For me meditation is a time for relaxing, listening to my body, and seeking answers inside myself. It is not journying (where you leave your physical body), but it is a way to get in touch with your inner divine self.
A useful book filled with meditations is "Seeds of Light" by Elizabeth K. Stratton. She focuses on self healing. Some of her phrases are a little "Hokey" but she does have some very good mental pictures.
Some meditations I've found useful are in my Book of Shadows.
