Marks & Spencer's If you are after clothing that is cut on the slightly generous side then head for Marks. Couple this with the fact that their clothes seem to last for ever it means that once you have the courage to buy something you can be assured it will last. Another great plus point for the shopping TV is the reluctance for Marks stored to install changing cubicles. As such their policy is buy the goods, take them home, try them on at home and if you dont like them bring them back for a full, no questions asked refund. So no longer do you have to guess what you will look like in that little black number - simply try it on at home. The only negative point is that they dont take any of the major credit cards. It's either cash, cheque or debit card. May not be a problem for you but bets beware. Marks & Spencer's have a home page, but to be honest its hardly worth visiting. Still for completeness look at http://www.marks-and-spencer.co.uk/ |

Shoe City / Saxone I tend to use Saxone (or Shoe City their mega-store equivalent) for my sensible shoes. They have a ladies outsize department - wittily called the "Small and Tall" section in which they regularly sell shoes up to UK size 11, and beyond if you are prepared to order. I admit it does take some courage to pick up a pair and walk to the cash desk, but you will find that the prices these people charge are substantially less than the more specialist CD/TV outlets. This said the range te carry is very much along the lines of sensible / high street fashion, so you are unlikely to find any 6 inch stilettos in red patent leather. Still for sound women's shoes at a sound price they are worth taking a look. On an aside I know a number of Saxone outlets actually hold specialist CD/TV evenings, so I guess most of the staff in these outsized departments are fairly relaxed about men buying. |

Safeways Why include Safeways in the list. The answer is simply the "Scan and Shop" scheme. In most (all ?) Safeway stores you can use their portable hand scanners to do your shopping. So you can walk around the store, scanning items that you then put in your basket. When you have finished you simply return the scanner to its housing and it prints off a bill. At this point you then simply take the bill to a special check-out, pay the cash and you are gone. Why is it interesting to the CD/TV, well in this process no check out girl paws over your shopping, raising her eyebrows because you have filled your basket with stokings, lip-stick and tampons. Its how shopping should be - you simply select our goods and pay the price. If you want to know more about the system, look on their homepage http://www.safeway.co.uk/ |

Transformation For those who are unaware of Transformation, they are a Nationwide (London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Newcastle) chain of CD/TV shops. For many of us it was "Transformation" that finally opened the door to the T-scene and as such I would still recommend them as the first port of call for any new TV's. For more information check out their web site at http://www.transformation.co.uk |

Cover-Girl Shoes 44 Cross Street, Islington, London, N1 2BA Tel: 0171-354-2883 (Open M,T,W,F 11am-5pm, Th 11am-7pm, 1st Sat of every Month 10am-4pm) Well worth the 10 minute walk from the "Angel of Islington" Tube station. A family run business that has been serving the CD/TV community since the 60's (I think they said). Though they do carry a full CD/TV range of goods, they excel in shoes, especially if you are into 6" heels, and wigs. I've always found they very friendly and very helpful. If you are in london its well worth popping in. |

The Philbeach Hotel 30/31 Philbeach Gardens, Earls Court, London, SW5 Tel: 0171-373-1244/4544 Fax 0171-244-0149 A place I wish I had known about years ago. This is THE place to stay in London for TV's - the actual accommodation is not much to write home about, but its adequate. However, once inside you are free to dress and move around the hotel, restaurant and bar totally unencumbered. If you do not have you own clothes, Ann (Tel : 0171-373-4848), the in-house dresser, will be more than happy to rent you the full works for the evening - as well as give you a complete makeover. If you have never done it before, spending an evening fully dressed, in the company of other TV's is an experience well worth trying and the Philbeach offers the perfect, safe environment to give it a whirl. So if you get the chance - try it! For some more information try http://www.scotsgay.co.uk/philbeach/ |
