Chapter 9: The Gender-bender years.

Moving into my own rented place in the early 70's was fantastic. I could really explore my femme side without disturbance. Somehow, though, I started up a relationship with a female colleague. She was a few years older than me, drove fast cars, had many gay friends, and knew how to party. But I couldn't tell her about my secret life. That lasted about six months and was never destined to last much longer.

Too many evenings on my own started to drive me crazy, I just didn't know what my next move should be. In the end I decided I needed interaction with some other human beings. I checked around for accommodation to share and ended up renting a room in a house shared by 5 others. Little did I realise that one of the first residents I met would become my soul-mate and my partner for the next 25 years!

She was hippy-ish, up-front, in your face - as extrovert as I was introvert. She had a fiery temper, was tough and has many times gone where others fear to tread. She loved animals, disliked children, and did not want any 'heavy' relationships - always talking about going 'back on the road' - and kept her backpack close to hand. We were definitely a couple of odd-balls who respected each other's quirks.

I thought that if this does develop into something, I'll have to be honest and tell her about my femme side. One evening, few weeks after we first became friends, I told her everything because if I didn't it would eat away at me forever. It was make or break. I needn't have worried. She had one or two 'arty' friends who were experimenting with gender-bending and she saw this as a further form of self-expression. From the first time she saw me as Suzi, she coached me with make-up, clothes, mannerisms - which on the face of it she personally seemed at pains to liberate herself from.

During our years together, I was indeed very lucky to be free to express my feminine side.
