Forest of the Elves

Although a preponderance of the old literature leads us to believe that faeries and elves (the names seem to be mostly interchangeable) are tolerant of humans, at best, some authorities differ.

Elves are generally taller than most humans. They are always more beautiful than humans, possibly partly because of their slim build relative to their height, which is prized in today's culture. They usually have fine, long hair, straight or slightly wavy, very rarely curly. Their hair colour is nearly always light in colour, with occasional metallic colours. Their eyes are narrow and almond-shaped, and they never grow facial hair of any kind. Their ears are rather on the long side, with the tips often going an inch past the tips of their skulls. Fine features combined with fair, unmarred skin and a strange ease of movement give the elves a graceful and agile quality. They live for a long time, with lifespan's being measured in hundreds to thousands of years. It is not uncommon to find immortal elves, though these can belong to a unique subset. They are magical, with the mastery of wizardry. Elven eyesight is much sharper than a human's, and they are able to see exceptionally better in the dark as well. Elves can also hear much farther away than a human. With a lighter frame than Humans, what they lack in strength and stamina is made up for with their superior agility - both in thought and movement. Given these traits, it is no wonder why these sylvan peoples make such excellent woodsmen and hunters. Most Elves will prefer to stay close to nature, and many become druids. All Elves have the inherent ability to detect magic and also may be wizards or mages. They are generally slightly regal, and very proud of who they are. Elves are distant cousins to the Pixies and share the intelligence and dexterity of that winged race to a lesser degree.

Elves typically have their own nation, language, culture and are ruled by the Queen (not usually by the King). The typical home of elves is in the forests, where they excel at archery. They also have a knowledge of, and strong respect for nature. Elves are also seen as usually musical, with a love of song and dance, music and fine art. Elves are used to living without houses or other permanent structures so they find it difficult to grasp the idea of permanence, such as the human obsession to order everything politically, categorically, and aesthetically into some scheme. They live in a world of change and cycles, where verything dies and is reborn, where struggling to maintain the status quo is seen as a juvenile Dwarvish trait. And when you live hundreds of years, there never seems to be any urgency, so unless there's a threat to their forest, elves seem very laid-back to humans.
