Crew Member
- Farley
- I am talking to Mr. Wong who is one of the Nautilus' crew members. Mr. Wong, how did you meet Captain Nemo?
- Mr. Wong
- He took care of me when I was near death.
- Farley
- How was that?
- Mr. Wong
- I was weak and underfed in a work camp. They forced us to work, often beating us if we didn't work fast enough. I collapsed one day. They beat me, but I had passed out. They dragged me to the place where the prisoners lived and left me in the doorway. Captain Nemo put me in the bed and gave me some of his rations, keeping as little as he had to in order to keep his own strength. He urged a few of his stronger friends to share just a little. That and his care gave me strength.
- Farley
- So you became one of his followers?
- Mr. Wong
- I owe him my life.
- Farley
- You don't resent his being king around here? You're his slaves.
- Mr. Wong
- I owe him my life. What would I have on land? More oppression. Here, I am content.
- Farley
- You are blind.
- Mr. Wong
- I would have to work on land. Here, I never go hungry. I am clothed and warm. I do not live in fear. No one can hurt us anymore.
- Farley
- What about your family?
- Mr. Wong
- These are my brothers.
- Farley
- No, I mean your real family.
- Mr. Wong
- Many of us lost our families due to war and oppression.
- Farley
- Who is Captain Nemo?
- Mr. Wong
- My brother, my friend.
- Farley
- No. I mean-what is his real name? Where does he come from? Who is he? (Mr. Wong gets up, bows and leaves.)
