That said, on to the review!
Humankind has colonized the stars and established itself as a space-faring people. The monarchy that once was is again, and the people look forward to a new golden age. The extra-galactic aliens that threatened them in previous years has subsided for the time being. The greatest threat to galactic peace, Abdiel of the Dark Lightning, died in the Corasian's galaxy. The happiness has a mirror, unfortunately. To claim his throne, the king entered into a contract with a powerful Warlady to marry one of her daughters, even though he loved someone else. Lady Maigrey Morianna lies within a stone cairn in that distant galaxy, and Lord Derek Sagan died helping the king and his fleet escape the Corasians. After decades of torment, the spirits of the two Guardians finally rest in peace...or do they?
Someone out there is calling to the surviving Blood Royal, of which King Dion Starfire is the last. However, in the Abbey of the Order of Adamant there is a silent monk by the name of Paenitens who hears the same siren song...and there is another who stands an invisible watch by the monk's bed who knows about the call. The one is a tall and forbidding presence whose hands once hefted the armaments of a warrior priest. The other is a striking figure with sea-foam hair and a face marred only by a single scar. They hear the strange voice calling to them across space and time and respond as only those of the Blood Royal can.
Strange things are afoot, for this mental summons comes to light just as "ghosts" begin interacting with the living. The Queen is kidnapped--a crime made the more painful by the child growing within her--by a well-trained troop of mercenaries. Someone is recruiting fighter pilots--sometimes forcibly--to defend a distant world in an uninhabited region of the galaxy. And somewhere on the dark world is the key to it all. In ones and twos the different parties converge on that dark planet, Vallombrosa, the Valley of Ghosts. Dion is there. His friend, Tusk, is there, albeit against his will. His queen, Astarte, is there. His longed-for mistress, Kamil, is there. Four figures that should be dead and resting peacefully are there. Most chilling of all, the "ghosts" are there, and they have an agenda all their own. Can Dion keep his wife, his mistress, his friend, his unborn child, himself, and the galaxy in one piece against a foe that commands the strange, invisible spirits that have been causing so much trouble?
Margaret Weis began the Star of the Guardians sequence with The Lost King and continued it with King's Test and King's Sacrifice. Now she brings the saga to a close with Ghost Legion. You thought Book III finished the story? Guess again: there's still one more chapter to play out, so be ready for some shocking revelations.
