The Lyceum Otherwise known as the House of Doors by Chasmyr With Ideas as found on the Internet by stated authors, where known |
he Lyceum is a college of mages dedicated to the furthering of magical knowledge. Any mage above level 0 may enter the college and be accepted. All who are accepted gain the benefits stated in the Benefits section. |
Benefits: |
1. An initiate into the college will be permitted to stay on the college property for as much as ¾ of the year. A room and cafeteria will be provided. It need not be a comfortable one. |
2. If a mage is over twelfth level and willing to donate to the college, an extra-dimensional set of rooms and labs will be built on college grounds. This is done using the eighth level Nilspace Doorway spell. The wizard must grant at least 20,000gp(40,000 if unable to cast the spell on his/her/its own), and petition the Council of Masters for a location on the grounds upon which to build. |
3. Persons of exceptional note to the Lyceum may be granted a set of rooms whose previous occupant has died if they are of lower than 12th level. |
4. Persons who are above 12th level and know of a person, who has left a set of rooms permanently vacant, may petition for the right to occupy them, regardless of the wizards circumstances. |
5. All members may purchase components direct from Aurora's Catalog for ½ the normal price. |
6. All members may also purchase spell scrolls of 1st-4th level containing almost any spell found in the Players Handbook for a cost of 100GP/level. This right is reserved for member's use only. |
7. All members have access to a cleric of Chrysalia 24/7/52/100 who resides on the grounds in a Nilspace temple to his god for headings, etc. for a small donation. |
8. Mages over 7th level are taught the secret accessways to the College grounds. These accessways are Pattern Images used for pattern and portal transport spells. They are taught where the exit and entrance points of 1 per level 7th and above are located. This knowledge is only gainable once a year. And the member must petition the right to know of any patterns. |
9.All members are immune to taxes. Taxes are paid to the government of the City of Mirrors via services rendered. These services are brokered through the guild, and the guild then tells each member what his or her yearly service will be. Some services may amount to more than one years worth of taxes. |
This portion was found on an Internet site attributed to a person identified as Serian. It has been adapted and used in my campaign because I found it to be a nice modification to the standard rules. |
A magic user may, as an initiate or any time thereafter, become a member of a university of magic. When a magic user becomes a member, he or she gains the following benefits: |
1. The magic user may choose a number of his or her own spells equal to one half of the character's intelligence score (rounded up), not requiring a "chance to know" roll, and automatically gaining those spells in his or her spell book. |
2. The magic user may have more than the maximum number of spells specified by the intelligence limit in his or her spell book, however, the magic user can never memorize more than his or her maximum limit as limited by level of experience that the magic user has attained, and maximum spell level as limited by intelligence. |
3. The magic user may purchase scrolls and other minor magic items from his or her university of magic at reduced cost. Spell components are also available at reduced cost. See rights 5 and 6 above. |
4. The cost of training for a magic user who is a member of a university of magic is reduced by at least 25%, perhaps more, when he or she trains at his or her university of magic. Multi-classed magic users gain this benefit of reduced training cost only for their magic user class. |
The magic user must visit his or her university of magic regularly, at least once per month, and at least once per year on a specific day, as decided upon by the magic user and his or her master, and at any time that the magic user has earned enough experience to allow a gain in level. The magic user may visit more times per year than this (and most usually do), but may not visit less times per year, or he or she will be expelled from the university of magic, and will lose all benefits of being a member thereof. All magical research conducted by the magic user must be reported to the magic user's master at the university of magic, and all magical research done by the magic user, as well as at least 25% of his or her earnings and other income must be sent to the university of magic, or the master of the university may withhold the offending magic user's privileges until such payment and research is sent to him or her at the university of magic. |
