What is a Computer?
An electronic device that processes input to generate output.

The Computer System

The computer system has two major components:

Hardware:  The equipment, or devices, associated with a computer

Software:  The instructions that tell the computer what to do

Hardware

Software

Through input devices, data  enter the computer system.  The piece of hardware that processes data is the Central Processing Unit or CPU.  After the data has been processed the result is sent to a printer, monitor or some other output device.     Software consists of all the instructions that control when the data are input, how they are processes, and the form in which they are output or stored.

Together, computer hardware and software accomplish four major operations:

Input
Processing
Output
Storage
