In last month's Cyber Pearl, we discussed how to get help with your new computer.  In this month's Cyber Pearl, we will discuss E-Mail.
eHow to Choose E-mail Software by John Henshell
Check your computer.  You may have Outlook Express or Netscape Messenger.  These are great for pop3 mail.

Use Outlook Express, Netscape Messenger or another free program, such as Eudora Light, unless you need specific capabilities these free programs lack.

Use Microsoft Outlook if you have Microsoft Word and would like to use all of its text editing features in your outgoing e-mail messages.

Buy the program you use at work if it is commercially available and you want to save the time required to learn a slightly different program.

Get a recommendation from your ISP. Find out what programs they will support.  Wait, you don't know what an ISP is?  Go to this month's Cyber Pearl Term.

Portal sites are the best.  Examples of portal sites are Yahoo, Netscape, Hotmail and Excite.  They are often referred to as portals, since they serve as entryways to the Internet. They function as search engines, your browser's default home page, your e-mail and your best friend.  A place to return to day after day.

Portal Sites
Short for Internet Service Provider, a company that provides access to the Internet. For a monthly fee, the service provider gives you a software package, username, password and access phone number. Equipped with a modem, you can then log on to the Internet and browse the World Wide Web  and send and receive e-mail. The capability of transmitting messages to other Internet users. Most users begin their Internet habits innocently enough, by exchanging
messages with co-workers.
Portal is a term, generally synonymous with gateway, for a World Wide Web site that is or proposes to be a major starting site for users when they get connected to the Web or that users tend to visit as an anchor site.
