PURPOSE: The South Asian Friendship Center & Bookstore desires to create a friendly, welcoming atmosphere where South Asians are comfortable to come in and browse the bookstore, sit in our facility, and engage in friendly conversations. SAFC & Bookstore also seeks to service its community through English classes, tutoring, monthly woman’s outings, children’s club, and referrals to various agencies that can help those in difficulty.

LOCATION: South Asian commercial district on Devon Ave. is one of the four largest such districts in North America, located on the north side of Chicago spilling over both east and west between California and Western Avenues. There are over 400,000 South Asians from India and Pakistan in the Chicago area. This Devon Ave. commercial area draws South Asian ethnics from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin. They are attracted by its numerous cloth, gold and Indian video shops, in addition to its food stores and restaurants and international shipping of goods.

SERVICES: The South Asian Friendship Center & Bookstore is dedicated to servicing the South Asian community. SAFC offers books in over 15 languages of the South Asian community, photocopy and Fax service with a friendly volunteer staff that are willing to sit and talk with anyone who comes to the Center. We have public rest room facilities. In addition to the bookstore the South Asian Friendship Center & Bookstore services the community by offering English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, after school tutoring, a children’s club and activities, a vibrant women’s group, referrals to social agencies for those in need, and seeks to extend friendship to all who come to the Center.
