REVOLUTION

Chapter 1 - Part C

Finally reaching the bridge, Captain John Samarra could relax. It seemed truly odd to him that this would end up being a sanctuary to him. But of course, here he could keep things authoritative and also not worry about people second-guessing him.

The bridge’s atmosphere was a professional, flowing one. It was all a credit to the Endeavor’s First Officer, Commander Kara Dunnedy. Quietly stepping out of the turbolift, the bridge crew took little notice, focused on their work at hand. He would have hated to have served under the Commander, trying to live up to her expectations. Trying to be the captain was tough enough around Dunnedy. When she chose to be, she was a devil to deal with, kind of like Katherine. He paused with that thought. He had to stop thinking like that, it wasn't helping.

Vigilantly sitting in the captain’s chair, Commander Dunnedy was reviewing duty logs and sipping a fresh cup of coffee. It was a different sight from that of Takamira’s office, more ordered and reserved. That was one of many differences in the two women. Still, they were good friends, like Moore and…

He always respected her diligence. Dunnedy thoroughly examined the logs, trying to draw all she could for them. A lot like how…Stop fantasizing!

Deciding to get to work, Samarra walked up to Dunnedy and got her attention. Turning, she nodded to the Captain. Standing, to give him the chair, Samarra waved her down. “That’s alright.” Whimsically, he said, “I think you’ve gotten too comfortable in my chair, Kara.”

Smiling she sat back down. “Only because you give it up to easy. You’d rather do research or explore, not sit idly on a patrol.”

Nodding, he conceded to her point. “Touché. But you love that seat, Kara.”

Smirking, she said, “You may have a point, it is a comfortable chair. I thought you were taking a break?”

Shrugging, he said, “I decided not to, Meg’s a little busy.” Standing silently for a moment, he said, “I didn’t mean to interrupt your reading, Commander.”

“No. I just thought I’d keep the chair warm and do a status check. If you’d like I could go on break with you. I suppose I could give the chair up for a bit.”

Smiling, he shook his head, saying, “I do believe you’re too perfect for Starfleet, Kara.”

Almost blushing, she looked down at her datapad. “I only do my best, sir.”

“It’s more then I can do.”

“Captain, I…”

Quieting her, he continued, “You just go back to what you were doing, but thanks for the offer. I’m just going to use Meg’s station to finish prepping for Debrock.” Joking, he said, ”I have to live up to your example, after all.” Turning to leave her, he turned back for a moment. “Don’t worry, you still have the bridge, Commander.”

She looked up to say something, but decided to let it go. Watching him walk over to the free science station, she decided to make her request to him. Quickly slipping over, she took the spare seat by Samarra as he called up the files he wanted. Smiling, she waited for him to look up.

John Samarra had an uneasy feeling as he looked at her. “You aren’t about to share some advice, are you?”

Innocently looking at him, she said, “Uh, no, why?”

A little embarrassed, he looked back at the console. “Nothing, it’s just been one of those days.”

Leaning on the console, she said, “I’m your First Officer, I’m suppose to advise, but only if I see a problem or I see the need. It's not like I'm Meg, John." Leaning in a little closer, she inquired, "So, do you have any plans for our stays of Debrock?”

Looking back at her now, he thought. “Nope.”

“Good.”

“Curious, he asked, “Why?”

“Well, I don’t know if you are interested, but I’ve been reading about this beautiful sight on the equator.”

“Oh?”

Seeing she’d hooked him, she continued, “Yeah, they have some massive fissures in the Western Hemisphere that emit a variety of gases. At sunset they cause the sky to ripple with a panorama of colors. It’s allegedly inspired many of their greatest works of art. I, personally, would love to go witness it.”

Smiling along to her description, he interestedly said, “It sounds really beautiful.”

“So, do you want to go there one night?”

Thinking for a moment, he said, “Sure. It’d be a lot of fun, but we ought to check with Meg, she’d love to see it.”

Slowly nodding along, she finally said, “Alright. That’s a good idea.”

Smiling appreciatively, he said, “I’m glad I have you, I’d miss experiences like this. Thanks for including me.”

Shrugging, she stood, “Hey, who else is going to do that? Listen, I’ll let you get back to your reading.” With that, she left him and returned to the captain’s chair and her duty log.

Looking back at the console he exhaled and wondered, who else would indeed.
