40. Rachel Buckalew. Born about 1760 in PA. Rachel died in Fosterburg; Madison Co., IL, in August 1867; she was 107.

Charlene Erman, 28 Oct 1995, 108 E. Pleasant St.; Coshoccton, OH 43812: "Parker came to Clark twp, Coshocton Co., OH, about 1817. His brothers Samuel, James & John soon followed him. Rachel came to Ohio then went to Illinois. William came to Ohio but returned to West Virginia."
Charlene Erman, 26 Dec 1995: "I corresponded with Ruth E. Hunt, the wife of a gggrandson of Rachel. Ruth was b. in 1886 and was researching the family many years before we started writing in the 1960's until her death in 1969. Quoting from her letters 'Rachel Bucklew Hunt in the census records of Oliver Foster family of Madison Co., Ill. from Springfield, Ill. records. The paper 'Alton Evening Telegraph' printed in a centennial edition an account of her death in Aug. of 1867 and that she was the oldest person living at that time in the State, also that she was b. in N. Jersey, has as a young girl seen our first President.' And from another letter 'I must tell you more of my Rachel Bucklew Hunt, her father (I do not know his name) had betrothed her to a southern planter and instead she chose to spend her life with a Hunt, so there may have been bad feelings over this.' Rachel's husband, Wm. Hunt, d. before 1832. They tell me that she rode a pony and drove their livestock from Ohio to the Miss. river. She was a widow at this time. Others in the family went to Alton Co., Ill by wagon train. Oliver P. Foster's wife was Lucille Vanatta, Rachel's grand daughter. I believe Kingen belongs to another Rachel, not in my line."

Hi Les.
Finally getting out to you the obituary of Rachel Buckalew Hunt. Her obit is still the oldest to date I've ever found (1867), and it only made the paper because of her age. I've got the original obit somewhere here - went to the Alton Library & looked it up on their microfilm to have a copy of the real thing. I still haven't found where she's buried...

REMARKABLE LONGEVITY. - Mrs. Rachel Hunt died a few days since, in Fosterburg, in this county, at the residence of her son-in-law Oliver P. Foster. At the time of her death she was one
hundred and seven years old. She was born in the State of Pennsylvania, in the year 1760, and moved to this State about thirty-five years since. She was undoubtedly the oldest person in this county, and very probably the oldest in the State. It is extremely seldom that newspapers have to record such a remarkable instance of longevity. This lady was sixteen years of age at the outbreak of the Revolutionary war and must therefore have had vivid recollections of the great struggle for national independence.

Rachel first married Kingen.

Rachel second married William Hunt. William died before 1832 in NrCincinnatti, OH.

41. Samuel Buckalew. Born on 10 May 1761 in NJ. Samuel died in Holmes Co., OH, on 22 January 1843; he was 81. Buried in Old Geo. Elliot Cem., Mechanics Twp., Holmes Co., OH.

Grave marker reads (Under Masonic insignia) "Samuel Bucklew, Soldier in Revolutionary War; Died Jan. 22, 1843; Age 81 yrs. 8 mo. 12 days."

Summer 1980 issue of SAR magazine. Above a photograph are the words "North Carolina Society." The picture is of a grave marker, and says, "Samuel Bucklew -- Pvt. NJ Light Dragoons -- Revolutionary War -- May 10, 1761-Jan 22 1843." The caption states, "The Old Elliot Cemetery in the hills of Holmes County was the dedication site of a Revolutionary War Marker (provided by the VA Department of Memorial Affairs, Washington, DC, at the grave of Samuel Bucklew by Registrar General Robert J. Reynolds and Lafayette Chapter Registrar Auchmutey. Honors were rendered by the American Legion Color Guard and the Spartan Masonic Lodge."

Lived in Monongalia Co., VA, until they moved to Ohio, built and lived in a log cabin home in Clark Twp, Coshocton Co., OH.

From Article "Home Sweet Holmes," HOLMES CO. HEIRS NEWSLETTERK, Holmes Co. Chapter OGS, PO Box 136, Millersburg, OH 44654 c/o Editor: "...served with the NJ Dragoons in the Revolutionary War. ... Samuel's farm was located at about the center of the present Lake Buckhorn development. In fact, the main stream, Sam's Run, was named for him. He died on 22 Jan 1843 and is buried in the George Elliott Cemetery."

A marker in Old Elliot Cemetery, Southern Holmes Co., OH. Apparently Samuel's stone is there but he isn't. (p. 434, Traces 2)

Samuel married Hannah Hall Poland, in Monongalia Co., VA. Born on 15 November 1770 in Philadelphia, PA. Hannah Hall died on 30 November 1856; she was 86. Buried in Bucklew Cem., Blissfield, OH.

Bucklew Graveyard is west of Blissfield, OH.

42. Hopeful Buckalew. Born in 1765. Hopeful died in 1849; she was 84.

In 1781 when Hopeful was 16, she married Thomas Ford, in South Amboy, Middlesex Co., NJ. Born in March 1758 in Cheesequake, Middlesex Co., NJ. Thomas died in Woodcock Twnshp, Crawford Co., PA, on 22 June 1831; he was 73.

Mil. Svc.:: Served as Private, NJ State Troops, 1776, and was at battles of Long Island, 24 Aug 1776, and White Plains, 28 Oct 1776; was a Private in Capt. James Morgan, Sr.'s, Company, Col. John Neilson's 2nd Regiment, Middlesex County, NJ State Militia from 8 Nov. to 7 Dec. 1777 and stationed at Cheesequake; was Private in same unit May 1778; enlisted at Amboy as Private, Capt. Elias Longstreet's 7th Company, Col. Mathias Ogden's 1st Regiment, NJ Continental Line on 23 May 1778 for nine months; was at battle of Monmouth, NJ Militia, 1779 for six months; enlisted as Private, Col, Elias Dayton's 3rd Regiment, NJ Continental Line on 15 Jul 1780 for six months; omitted in "general settlement," August 1780; was lPrivate, NJ State Troops, 1781; was in skirmish at Hackensack, 10 April 1781; received certificates 15 and 1128 amounting to pounds 24-15-0 and 2-10-0, respectively, for the depreciation of his Continental pay in the Middlesex County, NJ, Militia during the Revolution.

Was described as born in 1758, residence Cheesequake, Middlesex County, NJ. In 1778 was 5' 9" in height with light hair and complexion and brown eyes.

43. Mary Buckalew. Born in 1768 in NJ. Mary died in 1826; she was 58. Nickname: Polly.

She or her husband were living in 1850.

Another source says that Mary was born in 1757 and died in 1853+.

About 1790 when Mary was 22, she married David Tichenal, son of Moses Tichnor. Born on 16 October 1764 in Morris Twp, NJ. David died in Allegeny Co., MD, in 1854; he was 89.


Andrew's son-in-law, David Tichenal, was appointed guardian of the four youngest girls. He is also said to have been Administrator of Andrew Bucklew's estate.

44. William Buckalew. Born in 1770 in NJ. William died in Preston Co., WV, in 1844; he was 74.

Virginia Buckalew reports: "William Bucklew left NJ and settled in the area of Bruceton Mills, Preston Co, (W) VA, about 1790 and in 1792 married Mary A. Michael. In 1812 he purchased land from the Butlers, the Nathan A. Wilson place in the Whetsell settlement. In person he was short, heavy, strong and very active. Tradition remembers him as an industrious man and good citizen. The homestead passed from his family, and his sons lived mainly on the east of Briery Mountain, excepting James, who--about 1829--settled on Three Fork. Sixteen Bucklews were soldiers in the Federal Army. William and his wife, Mary, had seven sons and four daughters. George, a grandson of the pioneer, was a preacher of the German Baptist church. Emmett R. and Walter, great-grandsons of James, became physicians."

From notes taken from A History of Preston Co. WV by Oren Morton, 1914: "William Bucklew was a native of NJ, and his kindred included some prominent personalities. He came about 1800 and lived a while near Bruceton. Here, or at Selbysport, MD, he married into the Michael family. In 1812 he purchased of the Butlers the Nathan A. Wilson place in the Whetsell settlement. In person he was short, heavy, strong and active. Tradition remembers him as an industrious man and good citizen.

The homestead passed from his family, and his sons lived mainly on the east of Briery Mountain, excepting James, who, about 1829, settled on Three Forks. The Bucklew connection has become very numerous particularly in Portlands. Sixteen were soldiers in the Federal Army. George, a grandson of the pioneer, was a preacher of the German Baptist Church. Emmett R. and Walter, great grandsons of James, are physicians." (Gerry Green's note: Below the sketch was a note made by an unknown person which stated,'I recall Mother and Dad saying that Walter being their family doctor.' The notes were sent to Mrs. Howard Funk by Arthur Funk, and were, in turn, sent to me by Vera Bacus.)

1812: Purchased from Butlers the Nathan A. Wilson place in the Whetsell Settlement.

1830 Preston Co., VA, Census as Buckloo's.

May be the "William" who received a grant of 44 acres in Preston Co., WV, in 1838; Book 2, p. 240. From Sims Index, Land Grants of WV, p. 642.

Children of William and Mary Bucklew were born in the Whetsell Settlement, Preston Co., VA, later WV.

Briery Mtn. is north of Rowlesburg, WV and west of Terra Alta, WV, in Preston Co..

Delores Bucklew says, "As for Dr. Neil Bucklew, President of WV University, he is a descendant of William and Mary, of that I am certain."

"In 1800, William journeyed from his native New Jersey to a part of Virginia, which later became West Virginia. He lived a short time near Bruceton, but in 1812, he purchased, from the Butlers, the Nathan Wilson place in the Whetsell Settlement. He is remembered as a short, active man, industrious and a good citizen. The homestead in the Whetsell Settlement eventually passed out of the family." (Preston County History, 1978, page 118, by A. Dayton Bucklew, as told to his granddaughter, Wilma Shaffer.)

In 1792 when William was 22, he married Mary Anne Michael, daughter of Phillip Michael & Mary, in Selbysport, Anne Arundel Co., MD. Born in 1772 in Loudoun Co., VA. Mary Anne died in Cheat Hill, Preston Co., (W)VA, in August 1859; she was 87.

1850 Preston Co., WV, census lists Anna (Probably Mary A.) Buckalew as 78 yrs old and Mary (probably her daughter) as 58.

1860 Wetzel Co., WV, lists Mary Bucklew, 68, in household of daughter (sister?), Elizabeth Postlethwaite.

Death record says she died of "old age."

45. Nathan Parker Buckalew. Born on 11 February 1771 in Loudoun Co., VA. Nathan Parker died in Clark Twp., Coshocton Co., OH, on 20 May 1844; he was 73. Buried in Home Farm Cem., Coshocton Co., OH. Nickname: Park. Occupation: Farmer / Avid hunter.

Another source gives his birthplace and place of marriage as Crab Orchard, Preston Co., WV.

Discrepency: Dave Edwards; 1191 Sunnyview Lane; Wooster, OH 44691; 330 263 1948; dedwards@bright.net; gives Parker's birthday as 6 Apr 1771.

Parker reported that he came with William to Preston Co. and remained until 1817 when he went to OH. They had 11 children.

Charlene Erman and K. Wayne: "Parker came to Ohio in 1817 from Monongalia County, Virginia, now Preston County, West Virginia. He was a farmer and an avid hunter of wild game."

Dolores M. Johnson (14 Point So. Ct.; Little Rock, AR 72211), e-mail, has Parker's birthday as 6 Apr rather than 11 Feb. Another source gave birthday as 22 Jan 1771.

On 22 April 1806 when Nathan Parker was 35, he married Elizabeth Matheny, daughter of James Matheny & Mary Lamayne, in Morgantown, Monongalia Co., WV. Born on 14 December 1783 in Washington Co., PA. Elizabeth died in Clark Twp., Coshocton Co., OH, on 17 August 1872; she was 88. Buried in Home Farm Cem., Coshocton Co., OH.

Another source gives her birth in 1777 in Craborchard, VA

Dolores M. Johnson (14 Point So. Ct.; Little Rock, AR 72211), e-mail, has Elizabeth's birth year as 1783 and place as Washington Co., PA. She also has marriage date in April 1806 rather than May.
