"Much of the information on William Bucklew, son of William, came from Margaret Margery, a descendant of William. Data of children of William & census information is somewhat confusing."

Anna (b. abt 1815 in VA), in this household at time of 1850 and 1860 census reports, was a domestic. It is unclear as to whether there was any blood relationship.

There seems to be some confusion here between two Mary Bucklews--Mary, daughter of Anna, and Mary E., daughter of Philip.

William Baldwin first married Mary Elizabeth Elsey. Born about 1795 in VA. Buried in Briery Mt. Nickname: Polly.

They had the following children:
378 i. Sarah Elsey (~1810-)
379 ii. John Elzey (~1817-1892)
380 iii. Jacob (1820-1900)
381 iv. Delilah (1821-1918)
382 v. Rebecca (~1836-)
383 vi. Mary (1844-)

William Baldwin second married Mary Anna B. Fizer. Born about 1799. Buried in Briery Mt.

They had one child:
384 i. William T. (1848-1928)

159. Mary Buckalew. Born about 1795 in VA. Mary died about 1897; she was 102. Nickname: Polly.

1880 Census shows Mary 86 yrs living with sister Sarah Funk 72 yrs. One record states Mary died in 1897 which would have made Mary 103 yrs when she died. Date of 1897 not confirmed.

According to Morton's History of Preston Co. (WV), remained unmarried.

160. Jonas Buckalew. Born in 1796 in MD. Jonas died in Preston Co., WV, in 1880; he was 84. Buried in Three Forks, Preston Co., WV. Occupation: Farmer.

"As a young man Jonas was aware of the War with Great Britain which was declared on June 18, 1812. The entire frontier erupted in an orgy of blood skirmishes between Indians and whites. It was a turbulent time! Jonas must have waited about ten years after the war before deciding to marry one of the Morris girls.

"In those days ninety per cent of the population was engaged in working the soil, and the farmer was everywhere portrayed as the symbol of American self-reliance and civic virtue. Jonas is listed as a farmer on the 1850 Preston Co., WV, Census report.."

1819, 11 Oct; Preston Co., WV Land Office Tressury Warrant, #671B?: Issued that date to Philip Bucklew, assignee of Jonas Bucklew for 100 acres on the waters of Salt Lick Creek, on the SE side of Briary Mtn. The warrant also has a date of 11 July 1821 [prhaps a survey date?], and was signed 13 Aug 1825, James Pleasants, Gov. Grants No. 74, 1825-26, Reel 140. From Arlene Merservy., p. 271.

About 1822 when Jonas was 26, he married Margaret A. Morris. Born in 1803 in PA. Margaret A. died in 1880; she was 77.

The 1853 marriage record of their daughter, Mary Ann, gives her mother's maiden name as Margaret Myers. Morton's History of Preston County states Jonas married Margaret Morris. Both Morton's history and the Preston Co. vital records are known to contain errors. The discrepancy in Margaret's maiden name may be due to pronunciation variation--Mars for Myers, Morse for Morris.

I previously had a birth year of 1807 for Jonathan, but Roy Lockhart reports that Jonathan's death record gives his age at death as 78 years, one month, and 2 days, which--if the deathdate that we have for him is correct--would, I calculate, have him born March 1810.
