Sixth Generation (Continued)

Family of James Buckalew (48) & Elizabeth Cunningham Jackson

187. Elizabeth Buckalew. Born on 15 January 1809. Elizabeth died in Whitley Co., IN, on 10 March 1867; she was 58. Buried in Concord Cemetery, Smith Twp, Whitley Co., Ind.

On 25 September 1825 when Elizabeth was 16, she first married George Ray, in Holmes Co., OH. George died in 1842.

They had the following children:
501 i. John (1826-1910)
502 ii. Sarah (1830-)
503 iii. Martin (1830-)
504 iv. Mary (1833-)
505 v. Nathan (1838-)
506 vi. James (1840-1865)
507 vii. Lucinda (1841-)
508 viii. Elizabeth (1843-)

On 28 March 1844 when Elizabeth was 35, she second married Jeremiah Whiteside, in Whitley Co., IN. Born in 1813/1814 in OH.

According to Ruth Coward Cunningham (1990, 5100 John D. Ryan Blvd., Apt. 735; San Antonio, TX 78245): "Wanda Thomas, Box 625, Mooreland, OK 738521, a descendant of Elizabeth Bucklew Whiteside, sent ... the information about" the Whiteside children.

Jeremiah Whiteside is found in the 1870 and 1880 census of Whitley Co., IN, living with his son William and his family.

They had the following children:
509 i. Madison (1844-1915)
510 ii. William B. (~1847-)
511 iii. Melinda Matilda (~1848-)
512 iv. Phoebe (~1852-)

188. Jane Buckalew. Born about 1811 in OH.

Listed in her father's will as "Jane Nicholass."

Jane married Isaac Nichols. Born about 1811 in PA.

1850 Holmes Co., OH, Census: As "Nickles."

They had the following children:
513 i. James (~1836-)
514 ii. Ezra (~1840-)
515 iii. Nancy (~1842-)

189. Parker (Parkinson) Buckalew. Parker (Parkinson) died in 1845 in Whitley Co., IN. Nickname: Park.

Suit filed in Holmes Co., OH, court on 10 July 1850 by Peter Ceibert against heirs-in-law of Park Bucklew, plus his widow Elizabeth and Jacob and Catherine Springer. Park Bucklew apparently died without issue, so his brothers and sisters would inherit his land, less the dower rights of his wife Elizabeth. Park had purchased land from Jonathan Neville in 1838 (Vol. 14, p. 17). Jonathan had purchased this land from John Bucklew the same year (Vol. 5, p. 102). Park and Elizabeth sold land in 1839 to Jacob Springer (Vol. 7, p. 4). The whole suit seems to concern a mistake made in the land description when Park Bucklew sold the land to Jacob Springer. Relationship between the Bucklews and Springers not found.
Heirs listed in this suit besides Park's wife Elizabeth were George Bucklew, Jonathan Bucklew, Samuel Bucklew, William Bucklew, Rachel Bucklew, Christina Bucklew, John Whiteside and his wife Elizabeth Whiteside, John Fry and his wife Mary Fry, Abraham Pence and his wife Nancy Pence, Isaac Nichols and his wife Jane Nichols, John Summerly and his wife Phebe Summerly. Elizabeth Bucklew, Park's widow, is said to be living in Iowa. Jacob and Catherine Springer are in Union Co., In.

On 8 March 1832 Parker (Parkinson) married Elizabeth Ray, in Holmes Co., OH.

190. George Buckalew. Born on 26 May 1815. George died in Chili Twp, Hancock Co., IL, on 7 January 1856; he was 40. Buried in Chili Cem., Chili, Hancock Co., IL.

Some of the included information about George Bucklew's descendants is in PIONEERS OF THE PRAIRIE and Adams Co., IL records.

On 8 March 1838 when George was 22, he married Margaret Rebecca Clouse, in Holmes Co., OH. Born on 4 June 1819. Margaret Rebecca died in Chili Twp, Hancock Co., IL, on 9 August 1905; she was 86. Buried in Chili Cem., Chili, Hancock Co., IL.

"I have found a Lessie  on the 1870 Hancock Co., IL census with Rebecca, 46; Elizabeth 22, Amanda J. 16, Arena 14 and Lessie 4.  This would make Lessie born in 1866..."

There is some question as to how this Lessie fits into the family.

They had the following children:
516 i. Jacob (1839-1908)
517 ii. Elizabeth (1840-)
518 iii. David (1843-)
519 iv. Mary Ellen (1846-)
520 v. Melvina (1850-1922)
521 vi. Amanda J. (~1854-)
522 vii. Anna Catherine (~1856-1931)

191. John Buckalew. Born in 1820 in Coshocton Co., OH. John died in IL on 27 December 1887; he was 67.

1860 Hancock Co., IL, Chilie Twp, Census, Household 967.

On 26 May 1842 when John was 22, he married Charlotte (?) Elizabeth. Dougherty, in Holmes Co., OH. Born on 13 December 1824 in OH. Charlotte (?) Elizabeth. died on 16 June 1902; she was 77.

They had the following children:
523 i. Elizabeth Bethena (1844-1924)
524 ii. Sarah M. (1846-1920)
525 iii. Warren (1848-)
526 iv. Leander (~1850-)
527 v. Andrew (1852-1937)
528 vi. Alice (1854-1938)
529 vii. Zady (~1856-)
530 viii. Ermina "Mina" (1859-1938)

192. Phoebe Buckalew. Born on 18 February 1821 in Coshocton Co., OH. Phoebe died in Whitley Co., IN, in 1844; she was 22. Buried in Concord Ch. Cem.

On 20 April 1834 when Phoebe was 13, she married John W. Sumney, in Holmes Co., OH. Born on 25 January 1804 in Westmoreland Co., PA. John W. died in Whitley Co., IN, on 5 June 1892; he was 88. Buried in Concord Ch. Cem., Whitley Co., IN.

Marriage record spells name "Sumeny."
Information about this family in the GENEALOGY OF GEORGE C. AND SARAH (WINDLE) PENCE, sent to Ruth Coward Cunningham (5100 John D. Ryan Blvd, Apt 735; San Antonio, TX 78245) by Helen Hutchinson (9227 NW 15th Place; Gainesville, FL 32606) says that after Phebe's death in 1844 her children were taken to Holmes Co., OH. This checks out, according to Mrs. Cunningham, as she found them living with their grandmother Elizabeth Bucklew in th 1850 Holmes Co., OH, census. They returned to Whitley Co., IN, in 1850. It's possible that when Elizabeth Cunningham Bucklew, her sons George, John, and Samuel and other members of her family, moved to IL, they took the three Sumny children to their father in Whitley Co., IN.

OH, sent me the following sketch from THE GENTRY/WORTH COUNTY, MISSOURI HISTORY -- 1882: 'JACOB L. FRY, farmer and stock raiser, section 24, township 66, range 33, is the son of John FRY, a native of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, who married Mary BUCKLEW, a native of Maryland. After this event the subject of this sketch was engaged in farming and stock raising in Illinois till 1875, when he removed to Worth County, Missouri, and located on his present farm.
