Summary by Mrs. N.F. Fain, Sr., Rt. 2, Box 393 C, Quincy, FL, 32351 (28 Feb 1980 in letter to C.O. Buckellew, 1 East Upshaw, Temple, TX, 76501): William and Linnie Proctor were the parents of my great grandmother, Tamsy Caroline Buckalew, who married James Bennett Godard, son of Joseph and Sallie Everett, who settled in Monroe Co., GA, early in 19th century. Joseph Godard was a Primitive Baptist minister of the Gospel. He had one brother, Daniel, who settled in N. GA, also a Primitive Baptist minister. Monroe Co. is on the edge of what is called North Middle GA. Tamsy Caroline Buckalew was the daughter of William and Linnie Proctor and was born in Twiggs Co. on land which was a tract drawn in a land lottery open to soldiers who fought in the American Revolution as Frederick Buckalew had. William, being his son, was living there, according to cousin Betty's (Axton) records, when Tamsy Caroline was born. She was born Oct 22, 1821 and died October 22, 1887, according to her grave stone in what is now the edge of Lamar Co., created about 1920 by taking a part of old Pike Co and Monroe Cos. She died of cancer of left breast, according to family legend. I have heard it many times from my mother, who was Lois Godard. The son of Tamsy Caroline and her husband, James Bennett Godard, the son of Joseph and Sallie Everett Godard, was my mother's father. His name was William Thomas Godard and he, too, was a Primitive Baptist minister as well as a successful farmer, and he was a soldier of the Confederacy, serving four years as bugler for his GA regiment. His second wife was Martha Missouri Brown of Jasper Co., and they had six children to live to be grown, all marrying except one, Burnam T. Godard. Two were medical doctors, two were successful teachers, and one -- George Delma Godard -- was a minister of the Gospel, also had an important office in the State Educational Office, with offices in Atlanta, till he was a very old man. This is all I can tell you about the Buckalews or Bucelews, etc, whatever the spelling. Barkalew, Barkley, etc, all came from Buccleuch. I have been to Scotland where they came from. Our branch is of the Scott branch. I am a member of the Scott Clan. We are connected with Sir Walter Scott.

Elizabeth Axton said that his descendants were found in SC, GA, AL, MS, LA, Ark., TX.

Possibly born in GA.

Lived and owned land in Monroe Co., GA, according to records at Forsyth, GA. Deeded land off Johnstonville Rd. to school trustees for an academy.

1830 Calloway Co, KY, Census Index: (Asa) Miles Burkeloe, p 197; and William Burkeloe, p 212. [This may have been Asa and his father. Asa would have been 12 yrs old and William would have been 45 yrs old.] This is a questionable curiosity. We have no reason to think this is our subject William nor son Asa Miles. It is conceivable, however, that our William and Asa Miles may have been on an unknown and unusual excursion to KY for an unknown purpose. Since census enumerations were not made on different dates in different places, it was possible for persons to be enumerated more than once in the same year. (My note. Les Buckalew)

1835, Moved to Monroe Co., GA.

1835-51, Monroe Co., GA.: Elizabeth Axton says he remained there until his death.

Mrs. Virginia T. Fain (Mrs. N. F. Fain) wrote 28 Feb 1980 that William and Linnie lived in Monroe County, according to records at Forsyth, GA. "They owned land in Monroe Co., and records show that William deeded land to School Trustes off Johnstonville Road, for an Academy.

Buckelew, 30 April 2003: "I was reading the 1840 census for Monroe County, Georgia and William Buckelew is listed as head of the family and one female living in the household that is between 80-90 years old. I would imagine that this would be Ruth Gosling Buckelew, the wife of Frederick Buckelew and the mother of William. We know that she was living in 1830 and was between 70 and less that 80 years old on the 1830 census for Twiggs County, Georgia."

1850 Calloway Co, Ky, Census Index: (Asa) Miles Burklow, p 94. [Would have been 32 at that time.]

BUCKELEW -- PROCTOR -- BLOODWORTH (Written by Araminta Elizabeth Akin Axton, great-great granddaughter of William Buckelew, Dec. 1998) [Place location abbreviations are mine --Les Buckalew]

The William Buckelew family entered Monroe Co., GA, around 1828 after the Bloodworth family arrived about 1825. They were connected in marriage as Thomas Bloodworth married Tamsa (Tamsey) Frances Caroline Proctor in 1802 and moved to Morgan Co. soon thereafter. William Buckelew married Lenny Proctor, sister to Tamsa in 1808 in GA.

The Proctor and Bloodworth families left Anson Co., NC, and migrated to GA after the death of John Proctor in 1790. John Proctor and Lenny Edwards Proctor were the parents of Tamsa, Lenny, Susanna, Sara, Starling, William, and the wife of Mathew Bailey. The Warren Co., GA, records show that in 1808 John Proctor's property in Anson Co., NC, on the Flat Forks of Brown Creek was sold to Starling Proctor, son, by the heirs of John Proctor.

The Buckelews came into GA from Edgefield Dist., SC, where William was born October 22, 1785. His father, Frederick Buckelew bought land in Columbia Co. (later Warren) in 1790/1791 and paid taxes in Warren Co. through 1805. Frederick was a Revolutionary soldier and received land in the 1820 Land Lottery for his service. From Warren Co. William Buckelew moved to Morgan Co. where he lived until 1814 when he went to the 28th Dist. of Twiggs Co., GA. The Bloodworths were in Morgan Co. then went to Wilkenson Co. In 1818 Frederick Buckelew and Ruth Goslin Buckelew were in the 28th Dist. of Twiggs Co. They remained there through the 1830 census. From that point, there is no record.

William, son of Frederick, and his wife, Lenny, lived in the 28th Dist. of Twiggs Co. where Lenny died Jan 10, 1823 in childbirth. William remarried July 10, 1823, to Frances Leaven.

In 1824 William and family moved to Henry Co., GA, and from there he entered Monroe Co. On August 19, 1835, William bought Land Lot #132, 3rd Dist. of Monroe Co. from Solomon Bloodworh. This area was in the community of what was known as Liberty Hill. William and family lived on this land until his death January 22, 1863, and was buried there.

William and Frances Leavan Buckelew joined the Primitive Baptist Church at Teamon, Henry Co. (later Spalding Co.) in 1825 and were baptized by Elder James Reeves. *Harriet, daughter of William and Lenny, joined the Primitive Baptist Church at Whaley's Meeting House (later known as County Line) when she was fifteen years of age. She was baptized in the Towalaga River by Elder John Hambrick in November 1826 in Monroe Co. At the time she was on a visit to her aunt, Mrs. Thomas (Tamsa) Bloodworth. County Line Primitive Baptist Church later was known as Liberty Hill Primitive Baptist, located on Land Lot #100, 3rd Dist. of Monroe Co. (now Lamar Co.).

On Nov. 13, 1851, William deeded part of the Land Lot #132 to the trustees of County Line Academy who were T.S.M. Bloodworth, John Hunt, Mather Forby, Thomas B. Setter and Thomas B. Williamson.

William Buckelew's parents were Frederick and Ruth Goslin Buckelew. His grandparents were Richard and Mary Buckelew of Middlesex Co., NJ, Loudoun Co., VA, Mecklenburg, NC, and Edgefield Dist., SC. His great grandparents were George and Sarah Buckelew of Middlesex Co., NJ. His great-great grandparents were Frederick and Mary Buckelew of Middlesex Co., NJ.

693. John Buckalew. Born about 1787 in Lancaster Co., SC. John died in Washington Co., TX, after 1870; he was 83.

Thought to be James' brother with Lancaster Co, SC, ties, later moving to Butler Co., AL., appearing on 1840 census.

1843: Temperance, daughter of John, must have been one of the prettiest 18-year old young ladies in Butler Co, AL, when John Henry Watts went to her home and obtained from John and Temperance Buckalew permission to marry their daughter. When, in March of 1843, John Henry returned to the Buckalew home, he brought with him two friends, Wilson Murphy and Sterling Parker, explaining he had obtained the marriage license from the county clerk, and that Parker was a Justice of the Peace. The ceremony was performed in the Buckalew home.

Some time thereafter someone discovered that a marriage license had never been issued and that Parker wasn't a JP. The matter ended up in the Alabama Supreme Court.

Without knowing all the details, we know that Temperance and John Watts had a son, William P., born five years after the Supreme Court case. Whether the wedding was court-ordered or of the shotgun variety we do not know.

John Henry did disappear some time later (he could have died), Temperance and William moved back in with John and Temperance Buckalew, and a very special warm and close relationship developed thereafter between grandfather John Buckalew and grandson William Watts.

1844 (June), Butler Co., AL, Alabama Supreme Court Records: The State VS Murphy on points referred by Circuit Court of Butler. Indictment charges that the defendent, with other persons, did on 4 February 1843 conspire wicked maliciously etc. to seduce from her virtue, one Temperance BuckAlOw, a young maiden lady; and to assist and enable John Henry Watts to effect a pretended marriage with said Temperance Buckalow and to make John Buckalow and Temperance Buckalow, Sen. (Father and Mother of said Temperance) believe it to be legal; and thereby to enable said John Henry Watts carnally to know her, without legal matrimony between them...Indictment further charges that J.H. Watts, Wilson Murphy and the other conspirators afterwards on 24 March 1843 repaired to the house of the father and mother and falsely represented to them and their daughter, that said J. H. Watts had obtained a license from Clerk of County Court of Butler, giving authority to any one legally authorized to celebrate rites of matrimony to marry them. That Sterling B. Parker (one of the conspirators) represented himself to being a J.P. of Butler Co.; and he did then and there unlawfully marry J. H. Watts and Temperance Buckalow.
