684. Zebulon Madison Buckalew. Born in 1784 in Edgefield Dist., SC. Zebulon Madison died in Old St. Stephens, Washington Co., AL, on 5 April 1876; he was 92. Buried in Old St. Stephens Cem. Nickname: Zeb.

1808-1809, Sep; Edgefield, SC: Married Mary "Polly" Raily, thought to be the daughter of Abraham Raily.

1816: Sold his land in Edgefield Co., SC, and moved his family to MS.

1820: In Greene Co., MS with his wife, Mary (Polly) Raley Buckalew and children. In Section 32, T 15, R 4W in Washington Co., AL, on 12/3/1834. A charter member of the Concord Baptist Church at Yantley (Choctaw Co.), AL, on 11/29/1845. Received into Buckatunna Baptist Church by experience in June, 1843. Greene Co., MS, was organized in 1811. Died on 3/5/1876, probably in Washington Co., AL. Married Mary Raley in Edgefield District, SC, in Sept.18_7.

Contemporary of William and Elijah Buckalew, Sr. , and, therefore possibly--if not probably--son or nephew of Frederick .

Elizabeth Axton conjectured a Zebulon (married to an Elizabeth) to be the son of Richard . Such a Zebulon could have had a son Zebulon born in 1790. Not proven.

1808, Edgefield Co., SC, County Court Minutes: Zebulon Bucaloo served as a Juror.

1812, War of 1812 (SC) Veterans: Zebulon Buckalew with Capt. Marsh's Co. SC Militia., p. 234.

88 years old when he applied for War of 1812 pension. Not approved. His wife also applied later. Not approved.

Enlisted at Edgefield, SC, Courthouse at outbreak of war. Wasn't connected to a regiment, but was in rediness to defend Fort Buford until his discharge in early 1815, comparable to present day National Guardsman. Another source says he served in Captain Bryant Marsh's company under Col. Samuel May, having volunteered in either Jan. or Feb. 1813. Evidently they could not prove the service time.

1816, 22 Mar; Edgefield Co., SC; Deed: Zebulon (signed his name) Buckelew, of Edgefield Dist. to John Hamilton (& John Bolger?), for $85 -- 85 acres on the Mountain Creek Waters of Turkey Creek & Savannah River. It was part of a 196 acre tract originally granted to Jonathan Dawson/Dauron in 1797. Adj. land of Bolger & Aron Hill. Wit: Mackeness P. Goode & Leonard Scott. Mary (her X mark) Bucklew relinquished her dower rights before William Robinson, justice of the quorum on 9 Apr 1816; & the deed was ack. the same day by Goode. Recorded 22 May 1816. Book 33, p. 84.

1834, 26 Dec; Sumter Co., AL, Land Entry: Zebulon Buckaloo, of Washington Co., received land in Sec. 30, T15, R4W. Land may be in present Choctaw Co.

1835, 28 Feb.; Sumter Co., AL, Land Entry: Zebulon Buckaloo, of Sumter Co., received land in Sec. 29, T15, R4W.

1872, 28 June; Declaration of Soldier for Pension (War of 1812); Lauderdale Co., MS: Zebulon Buckalew, 88 (ergo b. abt 1784), of Luaderdale Co. stated he had married Mary Raily in Edgefield Dist., SC, in Sept 1808. He had served for the full period of sixty days during the War of 1812 as a Pvt in Capt Edward Bunt's Co., and had volunteered or enlisted at Edgefield Court Hourst in March or April of 1812. He was honorably discharged at the same place about January 1815. The handwriting is difficult to read, but it appears to say that Zebulon's Co. was not connected with any Regiment, but was in readiness to defend Buford Island, and was under the order of Gen. Butler. This document was a printed form, filled in for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll, and, at the same time, gave R. W. Walker, of Washington, DC, power of attny. The document then contradicts itself by saying: "his (Zebulon's) post office is at Cuba, County of Sumpter, State of Alabama," that his domicile or place of abode is eight miles Southwest of that place and in Lauderdale County, Mississippi. Signed by Zebulon (his X mark) Buckelew. A notation was made that he could not write now because his hand trembled because of old age.

From 12 May 1995 Letter from Frederick Jackson Buckelew to Lester Trammell Buckalew: "Zeb's pension application IS NOT a contradiction. He probably lived just over the state line of Alabama in VERY rural Lauderdale County, MS. Cuba, AL, would have been a much closer Post Office than Meridian, MS. Cuba is STILL just 2 miles over the state line."

Another write-up, accompanying LDS records: Zebulon Buckalew was born ca 1787 SC, possibly Edgefield Co. He m. Mary "Polly" Raley/Raily/Raity (Raley is most likely the correct name) Sep 1807-09, Edgefield Co., SC. She was b. ca 1795 in SC. Zebulon and Mary sold 85 acres of land in Edgefield Co, SC, for $85 on 22 Mar 1816 to John Hamilton. This land was on Mountain Creek Waters of Turkey Creek & Savannah River. It was part of 196 acre tract, originally granted to Jonathan Dawson in 1797. In the same document it says that Mary relinquished her dower rights before Wm Robinson on 9 Apr 1816. They probably left SC soon after this land was sold because they show up on the 1820 &30 Green Co., MS, Census. On 3 Dec 1834 they were living in Section 32, Twp 15, R 4W, Washington Co., AL. 1840 Sumpter Co., AL, Census. He was on the Poll List for 1841 in Sumpter Co., Al. He was a charter member of the Concord Baptist Ch. at Yantley, Choctaw Co., AL, on 29 Nov 1845. 1850 Choctaw Co., AL, Census. Census (18 Nov). 1860 (3 Aug) Clarke Co., MS. He was 75 and Mary was 67.

"Zebulon married Mary "Polly" Rayley, thought, not proved, to be daughter of Abraham Raley who lived in the same area as the Buckelews. "

In September 1807 when Zebulon Madison was 23, he first married Mary Raley, daughter of Abraham Raley & Sara (about 1764-), in Edgefield Dist., SC. Born in 1790 in Edgefield Dist., SC. Mary died in Washington Co., AL, after 1876; she was 86. Buried in Cem., Old St. Stephens, Washington Co., AL. Nickname: Polly.

685. Elijah Parks Buckalew Sr. Born about 1785 in TN. Elijah Parks died in Hall Co., GA., before 1850; he was 65.

Conjecture: That Elijah, Sr. is son of George (#224, Reunion). Dates, locations, and naming sons after Old Testament biblical prophets, e.g., "Moses."

"Based just on the census of 1820 showing Elijah near Rachel Buckelew I'm thinking Elijah must be closely tied to James and James Jr. Buckelew. "

It's possible, if not probable, that Elijah, Sr., was son or nephew of Frederick (#135, Reunion) who came from SC to GA. Frederick's son, William (#122, Reunion), born 1785, would be of same generation.

This William and this Frederick are ancestors of Lester Trammell Buckalew, the submitter.

I believe the Solomon, Elijah, Martha, and probably Matilda Buckelew were siblings, children of Elijah Parks Buckelew, Sr. (abt 1785-bef 1850).

Matilda is likely the "Mary (Phenie)" that I have in my records. This in the consideration of the prevalent and popular usage of nicknames, sometimes several for the same person.

I think that you are probably correct. Also, I think that we have to live with the possibility that sometime "proof" is not, nor ever will be, available.

It looks to me as if this may be a duplication of "Family 2." "Nancy" may be a derivative of Martha's second given name (whatever that was), a nickname, or a clerical error.

About 1813 when Elijah Parks was 28, he married Mary, in SC. Born about 1796 in GA.

In 1850, Mary and family living next door to Nelson Dobbs, Hall Co., GA.

In 1860, there was a "Mary," 64, living with Soloman Buckaloo in Blount Co., AL.

Another Marengo Co. record seems to indicate another, maybe his first, wife, named Mary.

1829, 30 Jan; Marengo Co., Marriage: Matilda Buckaloo to James B. Overton by L.B. Landrum; Ezekial Buckaloo, bondsman. Another source has a marriage date of 30 June 1829 and the groom's name as James Ouston.

1835, 1 July; Marengo Co., AL, Land Entry: Ezekiel Buckaloo, of Miss., received land in Sect 26, T13, R3E.

In my notes I have an Ezekial Buckalou,Planter-Shiloh township 13, range 3 E. (Therin's Marengo Co. Directory for 1860-61) .

1837, 29 Aug, Marengo Co., AL, Deed: Ezekiel Buckalow and Rachel, his wife, to William R. Bowler (or Bowlen), all of Marengo Co., for $550 -- a 79 & 90/100 acre tract. It was the NE 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of Sec. 26 and the SW 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of Sec. 23, all in T13, R3E. Ack. by Ezekiel & Rachell Buckerlew on the same date before George Bareklew, JP.

1850 Marengo Co., AL, Census: Farmer, married Rachel Green of Edgefield Co., SC. Other children are not known. The name Garrett appears among Buckalew descendants in AL, lending further credence to the supposition that Garrett of SC is of the same family. The "Elizabeth" is probably Catherine E., daughter of Wm H. [I suppose to be Ezekiel's son], who went to live with her grandparents. She was still with them at the census of 1860.

1853, 22 June, Marengo Co., AL, Deed: Rachael to Thomas H. Skinner.

1858, 3 Mar.; Marengo Co., AL, Gift Deed: Ezekiel Buckalue, "...for and in consideration of the sum of five dollars to me in hand paid by Rachael Buckalue, and the further consideration of the natural love and affection which I have for my wife, the said Rachael Buckalue..." -- the following named and described slaves: Marshall, a boy about 11 years; Jane, a girl about 8 year & Martha, a girl about 6 years. The slaves were given to Rachael, and to the children of her body. "...Ezekiel Buckalue executed this deed of conveyance, cheerfully and freely, as he considers it right, as the said slaves descended from the estate of William Green, deceased, the father of the said Rachael Buckaleu, one of his children and heirs at law." Wit.: A.B. Hosea & J. W. hall. Acknowledged by Ezekiel the same day before George Barkley, JP.

1860, 13 June, Marengo Co., AL, Census.

"Ezekiel and Rachel Buckelew in House 106. House 107 was Gideon Lucy age 38 b SC wife Elizabeth 30 b SC. He was a physician. Think he is the ?Lucy who was ordered to conduct the inventory for Rachel's estate. Wonder if he or wife were relatives?" (31 Dec 1997 e-mail)

Ezekiel married Rachel Green (745) , daughter of William Green (about 1768-) & Elizabeth Buckalew (323) (21 January 1770-1812). Born about 1790. Rachel died in May 1864; she was 74.

That Rachel is the daughter of Abner Green is pure conjecture as of 19 Nov 97, prompted by following correspondence from Mary <MGP1828@aol.com>:

1865, 10 Jan; Probate Court, Clarke Co., AL: This day came Lucy Administrator & filed an appraisment & inventory of said estate which is ordered to be recorded.

"BUCKALOE; Rachel: b. c1785 SC; grandmother of Catherine E. All the Buckaloes in Marengo were related and of the family originally in Bucks Co. PA, NJ, etc. They appear 1735 Henrico Co., VA; to NC & SC; to GA and to Dallas, Marengo, Pickens Cos., AL." "Marengo Co. Early Settlers (Series II), Vol. 8, Issue 42, p. 6.

"She is named in the May 7 1841 will of William Green. Relationship is not
mentioned. He does name his sons Jacob and Lodowick Green, wife Elizabeth,
sarah Kelly and a grandson,William Green, son and heir of Jonathan Green.( I
don't have the Book or page handy) but is Marengo Co Al

"Deed Book R page 367 Marengo Co Al March 3 1858--Ezekiel Buckalue gift deeds
to his wife Rachel the following slaves, Marshall, a boy about 11, Jane, a girl

"...Sarah may have been daughter of James (George's brother). George does not have a female of her age living with him. Of course we are assuming that there are only two men there (SC) that could have had a daughter b. 1792 that would have married 1808 in Edgefield Co."

"Location, age of family and origins indicate the Sarah may have abeen a sister of Zebulon and Ezekiel Buckelew."

On 12 December 1808 when Sarah was 16, she married Charles Raley, son of Abraham Raley & Sara (about 1764-). Born on 18 December 1788 in SC. Charles died on 14 August 1866; he was 77.

1860 Marengo Co., AL, Census: "...still had Charles Raley, a miller, 72 b SC $4,000 real property, $6000 personal. Wife Sarah 68 b SC.

1999, 6 Feb.; excerpt of e-mail msg received from Frederick Jackson "Jack" Buckelew:

"His wife died shortly after!!! She is listed as SUSAN!!!(I hope a clerk's
error!!) as she is SARAH in all other documents I have found!! Unless Sarah
died after 1860 census and Charles married a woman named Susan in his old
age!! And I did not find a marriage record in Marengo Co.for such a marriage.

"December 11 1866 records state that the following were heirs to Charles Raley.

According to Elizabeth Axton, Moses: Moved to Garrard Co., KY. 1808, Moses and Ann conveyed 50 acres, part of the 500 acres original grant to Richard Buckelew in 1772, on Little Steven's Creek, Colleton Co., SC, later in Edgefield Co.

Newton Cannon & Capt Thomas Yardley. Buckalew transferred to Capt. Smith's Spies on 5 Oct 1813. His residence was listed as Rutherford Co.

Before 1808 when Moses was 24, he married Ann.

689. William Abram Buckalew. Born about 1798 in SC. William Abram died after 1860; he was 62.

I'm guessing that this William was son of SC George Buckelew.

May be William "Abram" Buckalew.

About 1820 when William Abram was 22, he married Ruth Larymore, daughter of Larymore, in SC. Born about 1797 in SC. Ruth died after 1880; she was 83. Nickname: Ruthie.

1880 Cullman county, AL, Census: Ruth living with son James.

Ruth may have had a sister named Jane Larymore.

Les, I have really been working on the Buckelews in Wilcox, Clarke and Marengo Co AL--I am still amazed that Gerry had so little Wilcox Al info. Right now it looks like the John in Wilcox, who had a son named Tilmon and a daughter named Elizabeth who married Drury ALLEN and was the parents of
Edmund Allen and others was the son of old John the Rev Soldier, who was the son of Richard More later. JACK.
