857. Albert Eugene (Eugenius ?) Buckalew. Born on 30 March 1840. Albert Eugene (Eugenius ?) died on 4 August 1933; he was 93. Buried in Terra Alta Cem., Terra Alta, Preston Co., WV.

Eugene Bucklew was a Union soldier in Co. Q, 6th WV Inf. during the Civil War. On p. 372 of History of West VA there is a write-up about Eugene Bucklew and his family. Eugene lived and farmed after the war in the Portland District 4 mi. W. of Terra Alta, WV. At age 78 yrs, in 1918 he moved to Terra Alta and lived the rest of his life on Ringer Ave. near the R.R. Eugene voted for Lincoln in 1860. Eugene remembered when there was only housse in Terra Alta and when the B & O RR was built.

He was born near the old Fairfax Ford on Cheat River, now the Caddell community of Preston County. He grew up at the old home farm, and he gained only a little knowledge from the community schools of that day. The chief text books were the spelling book and the New Testament, of which his knowledge of reading was largely acquired. In 1863, at the age of 23, Eugene joined Company O of the Sixth West Virginia Infantry, the same company of his father and brother, John Allen. While stationed in Clarksburg, he, along with his father, got typhoid fever, and both had to use canes to walk the rest of their lives. Eugene was discharged at Wheeling June 11, 1865. Upon returning home, he worked on his farm in Portland District 4 miles west of Terra Alta until 1918, where, at the age of 78, he moved in to 103 Ringer Ave., Terra Alta, WV. On Nov. 25, 1924, at the age of 84, he was the first person to receive the Town Cane presented to the eldest man in the town limits of Terra Alta by the Terra Alta Rotary Club.

In 1861 when Albert Eugene (Eugenius ?) was 20, he first married Rachel Wilson, daughter of John Wilson. Rachel died in September 1865.

On 11 September 1873 when Albert Eugene (Eugenius ?) was 33, he second married Mary Ann Freeland (935) , daughter of Hiram Freeland (1833-1908) & Nancy Buckalew (393) (1828-), in Preston Co. WV. Born in October 1851 in near Terra Alta, Preston Co., WV. Mary Ann died in Terra Alta, WV, on 12 July 1935; she was 83. Buried in Terra Alta Cem., Terra Alta, Preston Co., WV.

Perhaps the daughter of Hiram & Nancy (Bucklew) Freeland.

858. John Allen Buckalew. Born on 16 January 1843 in Beech Hill Near Albright, Preston Co., (W)V. John Allen died on 2 February 1933; he was 90. Buried in Terra Alta Cem., Terra Alta, Preston Co., WV.

J. Allen, along with his father, John E., and his brother, Eugene, were in the same company during the Civil War--Company O, Sixth West Virginia Infantry. After the war, J. Allen entered the service of the B & O at Oakland on the section as a track man. For 24 years he was watchman at Rodamer. He retired in 1905 after 40 years of service. In 1906, he was elected constable of Terra Alta and served 8 years in that office and as town policeman.

On 19 February 1863 when John Allen was 20, he first married Louisa Chambers, daughter of David Chambers & Mary Ann Bosley. Born on 21 April 1847 in Oakland, MD. Louisa died on 27 November 1904; she was 57. Buried in Terra Alta Cem., Terra Alta, Preston Co., WV.

On 29 August 1905 when John Allen was 62, he second married Permelia Guthrie, daughter of Christian Guthrie & Almyra Smith. Born on 28 February 1850 in Preston Co., WV. Permelia died in Kingwood, WV, on 28 December 1938; she was 88.

859. Christopher C. Buckalew. Born in 1846 in (W)V. Christopher C. died about 1863; he was 17. Died in Civil War in Confederate Prison on Belle Island.

Mil. Svc.:: In Company A, Seventh WV Infantry and was wounded at the Battle of Weldon Railroad, taken prisoner, and, while at Belle Isle Confederate prison, died of starvation.

860. Mary Ann Buckalew. Born in 1848 in Preston Co., (W)V. Mary Ann died in Jackson Co., KS, before 1922; she was 74.

Mary Ann was daughter of Hiram and Nancy (Buckalew) Freeland. Why was she found listed as a child of John and Abigail? Was she adopted by John and Abigail?

In October 1864 when Mary Ann was 16, she first married John S. Knotts, son of Robert A. Knotts & Rosanna Shahan. Born about 1845.

"The Knotts Family", Betty A. Knotts, 1999, page 107: Knotts, John S., son of Knotts, Robert A. and Rosanna Shahan, born Ca 1845, married Mary Ann Buckalew in Oct 1864. She was born Ca 1847 in Preston County, the daughter of John Elzy and Abigail (Sipolt) Buckalew. John also served in the Union Army. His service record shows he enlisted at Oakland, MD 5 Mar 1862 giving his age as 20. (He would have been about 17.) He was mustered in Company O, 6th Regular Infantry 28 Oct 1863 and Honorably Discharged 20 Mar 1865 at the expiration of his term of service. John apparently died at a fairly young age. Mary Ann married (2) Washington Shaffer; she died before 1922 in Jackson County, KS. Only known descendant: Abigail "Abbie" Knotts, born Ca 1865, was counted in the household of Robert and Rosanna in the 1880 Census of Preston County, married James William Stemple in 1882.

861. Ruth J. Buckalew. Born on 26 May 1854 in Cranberry Summit/Terra Alta, Preston Co., (W)V. Ruth J. died in Preston Co., WV, on 6 November 1918; she was 64.

On 5 May 1875 when Ruth J. was 20, she married Isaac E. Whiting, in Garrett Co., MD. Born about 1828. Buried in Pine Run Cem., Preston Co., WV.

They had one child:
