Mil. Svc.:: A Union soldier.

In an article on J. Allen Bucklew, the following was written about his father. The article states that John E. and three of his sons (Eugenius, John Allen, and Christopher) served in the Union Army during the Civil War with John E. surviving but being of poor health when he returned from the war as a result of contracting typhoid fever while being stationed at Clarksburg, and never fully recovering. He had to use two canes to enable him to get about, but kept his home on the farm, although he could do little of the work. He was born near the old Fairfax Ford of Cheat River in the locality of Caddell. He had no education because of the lack of school facilities in his day. John E., along with Eugenius and John Allen, were all in the same company and regiment--Company O, Sixth West Virginia Infantry--under Captain Joseph M. Godwin and Colonel Wilkinson, during the Civil War. John E. enlisted in Feb. 1862.

About 1840 when John Elzey was 23, he married Abigail Sypolt, daughter of Christopher Sypolt (-1864) & Mary Martin. Born in 1822 in (W)V. Abigail died on 28 April 1898; she was 76. Buried in Unnamed Cem., Aurora Rd. or Lance Ridge Rd., Preston Co. (?) WV.

22 Sep 1998, from Robert C. Bowman: Mary E. Bucklew... For information on this woman I have only sketchy notes made by my grandfather. I have some doubts about the accuracy of much of his Grandpa's work, but -as you said- misinformation may be better than no information; at least it is a place to start. Grandpa wrote that Mary married Dave Shaffer of Scottdale, PA. Their five children were:
Velona who married a Calbaugh from Kingwood, WV
Verna,
Lista who married Erwin R. Hickson,
Scott Shaffer who died without heir
Elias Shaffer whose children were Herbert, Mabel, and Nellie. (This was
the branch of the family with whom my grandpa was most closely in touch.)

Mary married David Shaffer, son of Christopher/Christian (?) Shaffer (about 1819-) & Elizabeth Freeland (1815-1892). Born about 1842 in (W)V.

1870 census Preston Co (Union Twp) 73-73 David C. Shaffer 28 Va Labr, Mary 25 Va, Elias 7 Va, Scott 5 Va, Tabitha 3 Va.

David Shaffer was the son of Christian/Christopher SHAFFER, M & Elizabeth FREELAND, F.

They had the following children:
874 i. Louisa Ann (1858-1937)
875 ii. Velona
876 iii. Verna
877 iv. Lista
878 v. Scott (~1865-)
