(Edna Taylor shares a copy of this old Civil War letter, written by Ansel to his sister. The family records do not show a "Mollie." At this moment it is being assumed that Mollie was probably a nickname for Ansel's sister, Mary C. The original letter is in the possession of Edna's cousin, a daughter of Kate Buckelew Vereen.)

1864, 1 May; Orange C H Va; Camp (?) 17 AL Regt.--Mollie Buckalew --Dear Sister -- Yours by Kitchins has been received. And I have concluded to send you a note in reply, but I don't know what to wright now. Well, I shall spend my opinion about J. M. ___?___ . He, I guess, is a very nice boy but is very fickle-minded. He ought to be a very (?) short for he (?) hue had a very good chance. My advice to you is to marry when you get a good chance for girls will not have as good chance in future as in past. Be (?) shure to never let any person fool you, for man is very deceitful. Never offer any encouragement until you find they are in earnest. As for myself, I have played out entirely in the womankind. I have dropped all my correspondents as none of them suit me. I am very independent anyway. I wrote to Mary Bowlin a short time since, if she replies, and her letters suit me, I'll keep up a friendly correspondence with her, but nothing more. I have one in view I think will fill the bill if I live to get home, but I don't never expect to write to her until I see her again. She lives near us. M. 1908, 3 Jul, Confederate Pension Application. Ansel M. Buckelew, of Jefferson Co., Birmingham Post Office, age 65, stated he had enlisted as a private in Co. F, 14th Ala. Regt. on 7 Aug 1861 at Auburn, Lee Co., Ala. He had been parolled on __ Apr 1865, and had previously been wounded at the battle of Gettysburg, PA, and was now unable to make a living on account of age and wound.

1913, 25 Nov., Confederate Pension Application. ...of Lamar Co., Sulligent Post Office, stated he parolled from Elmira, NY on 26 Feb 1865, and had previously been wounded at the battle of Gettysburg, PA, on 2 Jul 1863.

Buried Friday. Dr. A.M. (Ansel) Buckelew, 84, well known local physician and Confederate Veteran, passed away at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. A.S. Sutton, of Jasper (Walker Co.) last Wednesday at 11:35. Dr. Buckalew located in Jasper about 15 years ago and was actively engaged in the practice of medicine until about two years ago, when he had a slight stroke of paralysis. He was confined to his room most of the time during the past twelve months, but was able to take a car ride occasionally. Mr. Sutton carried him to the Confederate Reunion in Birmingham last May and he rode in the parade.

The body was shipped to Sulligent (Lamar Co.) Thursday where funeral services were held Friday. The services were in charge of Rev. R.W. Clarke, assisted by Rev. H.L. Tully, pastor of the Sulligent Baptist Church. Rev. L.B. Wages, pastor of the Milport (Millport, Lamar Co.) Baptist Church, and Rev. J.T. Nolen, pastor of the Sulligent Methodist church. The active pallbearers were H. G. Williams, A. C. Harbor, L.A. Murphy, L.W. Hill, W.W. Mayes and Mr. Morris. Burial was in Sulligent cemetery.

Dr. Buckelew is survived by three sons, Dr. J. C. Buckelew, Roy Buckelew and Leo Buckelew of Sulligent; Mrs. A.S. Sutton, of Jasper, and Mrs. J.H. Vereen, of Miami, Fla., also one sister, Mrs. E.O. Emory, of Opelika, Alabama.

Dr. Buckelew was born at Bloomingdale, near Roanoke (Randolf Co.), Ala., in Jan 1843. He served in the Confederate Army and participated in several important battles including the "Battle of Gettysburg." He graduated in medicine from the Louisville, (Ky.) Medical college. He was a unique character, full of humor and he enjoyed teasing his friends. He was a familiar figure on the streets of Jasper, wearing as he sometimes did, a high silk or "beaver" hat. He had many friends who are grieved to hear of his death. He was a member of the Baptist church.

"...the veteral physician and octogenarian ... still an active representative of his profession at Jasper, AL. Ansel M. Buckelew was born in Chambers Co., AL, January 29, 1843. ...was reared in Chambers Co., attended private schools there, continued his literary education in the newman Seminary at Newman (sic... Newnan or Newton?), GA, and finished his medical course in the University of Louisville, where he was graduated march 4, 1870. He practiced in Chambers County until 1872, then at Opelika one year and for twenty years carried on the work of his profession at Alexander City, AL, a place he named and which was originally called Youngsville. He built the first hotel at Alexander City. For several years he practiced at Anniston in Calhoun County and about 1897 removed to Sulligent in Lamar County and since 1908 has made his home at Jasper, where he still continues an office practice as physician and surgeon. He is a democrat, a member of the Missionary Baptist Church and belongs to the Walker County and Alabama State Medical Associations. he joined the Calhoun County Medical Society when it was organized in 1883 and is the only one of the twenty-seven charter members still living. During the Civil war Dr. Ansel M. Buckelew was a member of Company F of the Fourteenth Alabama Infantry, being mustered in at Auburn, AL, August 12, 1861. He participated in such battles as Southern Pines, Fredericksburg, Salems Church, Spotsylvania Courthouse, was all through the Wilderness fighting, and at Gettysburg was wounded by a piece of shell in the third day's fight and incapacitated for further field duty.

"Dr. Ansel M. Buckelew married in 1867 in Chambers County, Miss Edna Pinckard, a native of Rnadolph Co., AL, where she was born in 1850. She died at Moultrie, GA, in July, 1925. They had a family of eight children: Olive, who married Raymond Johns, a farmer and both died at Sulligent; Fred, a physician and surgeon who died at De Armonsville, AL; Dr. J. C., of Sulligent; Edna, who died when two years old; Ruby, wife of Sidney Sutton, a millwriught at Jasper; Leo L., a carpenter and builder at Sulligent; Roy, a hotel proprietor at Moultrie, GA, who during the World war was in the aerial service, stationed at San Antonio, TX, and later at Indianapolis, being in the service altogether eighteen months; and Katie, wife of Jack Vereen, associated in business with Roy Buckelew at Moultrie." , p. 419.

(1814-), in Chambers Co., AL. Born on 17 April 1847 in Randolph Co., AL. Lucy Edna died in Moultrie, Colquitte Co., GA, on 11 July 1925; she was 78. Buried in Moultrie, Colquitte Co., GA.

In later years Lucy lived with son, Roy, and daughter, Kate. Ansel lived with their daughter, Ruby.
Obituary--probably 1925 in a Colquitte Co., GA newspaper: AGED WOMAN DIES AT NORMAN HOTEL. Funeral of Mrs. Buckelew Held Saturday Afternoon--Interment at City Cemetery. The funeral of Mrs. Lucy Edna Buckelew, who died at the Norman Hotel Friday afternoon, was held from the hotel parlor Saturday afternoon with Rev. Walter P. Binns, of the First Baptist Church, in charge. Interment followed at the City Cemetery.

Mrs. Buckelew, who came from Sulligent, Ala., had made her home here for the past six months at the Norman Hotel with her children, Mr. Roy Buckelew and Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Vereen. She was 76 years old and had been in enfeebled health for a number of months and had been confined to her room for some time.

She was a faithful and consistent member of the Baptist Church. During her short residence here, though suffering from complications brought about by old age, she had endeared hereself to all those with whom she had come in contact.

She is survived by the following children, Dr. J. C. Buckelew, of Sulligent, Ala.; Mrs. A.S. Sutton, Jasper, Fla. (should be Ala.); Leo Buckelew of Sulligent; Roy Buckelew of Moultrie and Mrs. J. H. Vereen of Moultrie.

On 14 February 1860 when Olive Olinska was 15, she married Dr. Aurelius Grigsby Emory , M.D., son of George Smith Emory (1817-1907) & Mary M. Mays (1820-1900), in Chambers Co., AL. In Buckelew home near Lafayette, Chambers Co., AL. Born on 7 January 1839. Aurelius Grigsby died on 21 September 1901; he was 62. Buried in Rosender/Rosemere (?) Cem., Opelika, Lee Co., AL.

Mil. Svc.:: "...served as a surgeon in the Fourteenth Tennessee Regiment, Archer's Brigade during the Civil WAr and afterwards practiced medicin at Opelika until his death;..." , p. 419.

"A.G. Emory enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1862, in Roanoke, AL., serving as an Assistant Surgeon in Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, and was attached to Tennessee's 14th Regiment. He was captured by Union Soldiers in 1863, and held prisoner for six months. In 1864, he served at Stuart Hospital in Richmond. After the war, Emory practiced medicine in Opelika, which in 1867 was no longer in Chambers (Co.), but in Lee Co."
