Accompanied by Betty's mother Frances (Harris) Day-Thompson, moved to Cass Co., TX in 1877. Betty's sister Eliza Day (Mrs. R. C. Priester) moved to TX several years earlier.

Sim and Betty lived in Cass Co. about seven years, then moved to San Jacinto Co.

During the winter of 1901 or 1902 Sim and Betty, traveling in covered wagons, moved to Houston Co. They made their home in Grapeland. Betty had many relatives in and near Gralpeland. Her sister Eliza Priester lived in Grapeland and her maternal aunt Mary Jane (Harris) Wilson had moved earlier into this area. Among Betty's cousins are the Wilsons, the Wrights and the Watkins, some of whose descendants still live in or near Grapeland.

Sim died 13 Apr 1918. Betty was accidently killed 7 Oct 1925 when hit by a bus. This may have been the earliest fatal bus accident in Houston Co. Both are buried in Denson Springs Cemetery, a few miles from Grapeland, across the county line in Anderson Co.

Sim and Betty's descendants are scattered across the U.S. yet they remain a close knit family. A family reunion, "The Decendants of Sim and Betty Buckalew" is held every year in Bowie, TX, under the direction of Hazel Kunkel, a great-grandchild.

I was just checking your site for any new information on the family of Mary E. Buckalew, wife of Benjamin Franklin Chatham. I noted a couple of things that need updating.

1. Ruth Idalett Long, daughter of Ida Ann Chatham and Thomas Joseph Long, died on December 5, 1933. She was 26. The cause of her death was from complications involving a heart condition.

2. Viva Inez Long, daughter of Ida Ann Chatham and Thomas Joseph Long, was 2nd married to Allison Greenwood. I believe they married in Alabama.

I was really checking to see if you had any further information on Simeon A. Chatham, son of Mary and Benjamin. I found information that a S.A. Chatham married a "Nannie Bell Moore" in Clarke County, Mississippi on 11 January, 1903. The 1910 Census for Hurricane Creek, Lauderdale County, Mississippi, lists a Simeon A. Chatham, Minnie (wife), Simeon A. Jr. (son), Beatrice (daughter), and Henry F. (son). Further records seem to be nonexistent, except for the 1920 Census for El Paso County, Colorado in which a Beatrice and Henry F. Chatham are listed in the household of William L. Chatham as niece and nephew. I have been unsuccessful in locating any further information on Simeon A. Sr. and his wife. I did find a Simeon A. Chatham on the death index for the state of California. It shows he was born in Mississippi and that he was close to the age that Simeon A. Jr. would have been. There is also a Henry F. Chatham, from the state of Coloradeo, listed as missing in action during WWII. He was in the Air Force.

I hope to find out more on my next trip to Mississippi. All of my research has been limited to internet records and a little from the Lauderdale County Archives in Meridian, Mississippi. I really appreciate your website. It has given me a lot of information to follow-up on. I will send you additional information as it is available and confirmed.
