PLACE
? ? ? ? ?
The plan for the diving dash kept
changing for months. The pace of life is hectic these
days and routine obligations pressing. Something would
always come up and put off our plans in spite of
Konstantinas protests Come on, we are not climbing up the
Himalayas, were only going diving, theres no need to
think twice about it!
I must say I had missed a good dash to beautiful greek
sea so on the last phone call I simply replied
"Place! Name the place and were off!". The
whole thing was almost putt off again as Konstantina had
been prepared to hear all kinds of objections and not
"Place ! name the place and we re off!"
It was June 20 when it was decided to set off and Pylos
was the first destination.
- Have you been
to Pylos before? I asked her on the way.
- No! Have you?
- I havent either! How come you thought of Pylos?
- I dont know! I was ready to confront you on your
possible excuses not to go diving , so I was caught
unawares when you said Place! and the first thing that
came to mind was a word beginning with P!
So we arrived at stunning Pylos on Sunday afternoon. I
parked the car in the parking lot in the port and the
first thing that I saw coming out was the Port
Authorities. That meant a visit to the authority
responsible and the beginning of surprises. Thodoros who
was on duty there, came from Vrahni, a village 10
kilometers far from Kalavryta, my
place of residence for the last 11 years. Fancy two
highlanders from the same place meeting at Pylos Port
Authority! After the relevant information and the
promised cups of coffee after Theodoros s going off
duty, we enjoyed the calm that gazing at the sea can give
to those who understand her secret language and feel her
eternal calling in their veins
The next day we looked for the people of Pylos
Diving Club so as to ask them anything that a diver would
like to know about Pylos. We were in for more surprises
though. Elias and Thanasis, two brothers that looked
children of the sea, informed us on the places where
diving is allowed and promised to show us around the
underwater wonders of Pylos.
We arranged to take five or six dives within the week
using their boat and in a very short time we were talking
as though we had known each other for years. Elias is a
trainer and president of the club but he doesnt have an
attitude.
He is a simple person and wins you over within minutes.
What was on my mind, however, was the cost of a five -
day underwater tour in the deep blue whose calling became
increasingly more intense with the passing of time. I
finally dared ask Elias about the damage and I was
flabbergasted . He paused for a few seconds and said :
just the fuelwe are not into earning money from the club.
We love the sea and we want to make others love it too.
After this reply and it is not a question of money how
can you not love the sea and her children even more?
The least I could do was help create this site so that
others could know that there still exist romantics in
diving who love what they do because it simply fills them
with the joy of creation and a feel for life itself.
From inside this text I would like to
express a great thank you to Elias and Thanasis
Kouvelas for the lesson they gave me as well as Thanasis
Niokos for keeping us company and providing us with his
medical services. To Thodoris and Evi I will express
thanks in person in Kalavryta. Bless you all my friends
..
And to my reply Place! to Konstantina I will add
another P :...............
