A House Cleansing Ritual

This ritual is adapted from a ritual originally written by my good friend Gwion. If you live in a house with other people, make sure they are either willing to participate in the ritual or that they are prepared to leave you for a couple of hours to perform the ritual alone

What you will need

* A table top or other altar surface: it is important that when you carry out a ritual that all of your energy is focussed on the ritual. You will therefore need a place where all of your ritual tools can be placed..

* Incense Burner or Censer: you will need something to burn incense in. This can be a purpose made censer or it may be a porcelain bowl filled with sand or salt to act as an insulator (so that the bowl does not crack from the heat).

* Candle holder and white candle

* Tray

* Broom: a millet broom is preferable, one with no plastic components would be best (but they do tend to be about three times the cost). A hazel broom would be fantastic.

* Purification Incense (recipe) and Charcoal Block

* Amethyst crystal

* Purification Anointing Oil (recipe)

* A snack of some nuts, fruit or a picnic

The Ritual

This is a ritual where you will be moving around your home. Therefore, it is important that the incense burning bowl or censer can be moved, so you may want to place it on a wooden tray so that it is easy to carry, and does not burn your hand when you hold it.

First stand before your altar. Anoint the candle with the oil. Holding the candle in your left hand and using the index finger and thumb of your right hand, start at the bottom of the candle and anoint towards the wick. Light the candle, then the incense block. Put the block into your bowl on the tray with the amethyst crystal. Visualise your home inside a circle of white light. Using the broom sweep the house, counter clockwise, pushing the psychic dirt to the front door and then out of the building. While you are doing this chant, "By the power of the Sun and Moon, I drive out the old, and invite in the new."

Return to the altar and say three times, "By the power of the Sun and Moon I call on you to fill this house with positive energy. I call on you to drive all old energies out of this place. I call on the Sun and Moon to fill this house with love and light". Sprinkle some of the incense onto the charcoal block. In this ritual you want to create a lot of smoke. Now move around the house three times again with the tray holding the incense bowl, putting more incense onto the block. As the smoke fills the house, visualise the psychic dirt being forced out through the gaps around windows and doors, and say three times, "With this sacred smoke I drive out the old." Then say three times, "By the power of the Sun and Moon I call on you to fill this place with love and light. So mote it be." Hide the amethyst crystal in a place where it will not be found by others. Visualise the white light circle around the house dissolving. When it has fully dissolved, snuff out the candle (never blow out a candle, it will offend the fire spirits). Go into the garden or to a local park and eat your snack or picnic. When you return open the door and windows and let light and joy and good energy into the house.

This ritual can be repeated whenever you feel it is needed.
