Whatever Happened to Liberty?
America is in denial. It clings to the belief that we are still "the land of the free and the home of the brave," despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
- We are free neither to succeed nor to fail on our own terms.
Government decides who will enjoy the fruits of your labor and
ingenuity, and what proportion of your earnings you will be allowed to
keep. It also guarantees that even the most self-destructive and
irresponsible choices in life, willingly and knowingly embraced, will
yield minimal discomfort and win you cash prizes if you work the
system right. Government offers no incentive to work hard, but plenty
to hitch a free ride on the gravy train.
- We have no clear title to our property, which the government
routinely seizes without proof of wrongdoing no trial, no appeal, and
often with no charges ever filed. Your car can be seized if a casual
acquaintance drops a marijuana cigarette between the seats, or if your
husband picks up a prostitute while driving it. Bizarre? The Supreme
Court just upheld that sort of forfeiture.
- Being good honest, peaceful, and generous used to be a mark of maturity and character, the norm for human behavior. Being evil dishonest, violent, and cruel signified abject failure at being fully human. Today, people expect strangers to exploit opportunities for evil. The new standard is unscrupulous exploitation getting away with whatever you can. Governments solution? Since we cant trust people to be good, lets make them compliant. Then, with a law to cover every situation....
We are well on the way to the totalitarian ideal, expressed by this notorious Nazi slogan: All that is not required is forbidden. Morality is already nearly superfluous.
