There is no more important part of The Constitution than these 3 lines of ink. Why? Because without it, the rest of our rights, laws, and freedoms are simply that; ink. The 2nd Amendment is what gives We The People (you, me, your parents, your children, etc…) the RIGHT and the ability to make damn sure the rest of our freedoms and Rights are not trampled on.
All one needs to do is look at the current events in Serbia. An elected president is driving people from their homes, killing teachers, burning houses, and basically being a tyrant. Without individuals with guns, what is to stop a similar leader from being elected and doing the same here? Will the police protect you? The military? Some would, I'm sure, but certainly not all. Those with firearms would be fighting those with firearms, and where would you be? Huddled in a corner hoping that you didn't get caught in the crossfire with no way to evenhandedly defend yourself. Couldn't happen here? Are you sure? Do you trust your fellow Americans that much?
With firearms in the hands of private citizens, no would be dictator would DARE to try the same. We're too well armed. 25% of us in fact. An army of 62,000,000. Who in their right mind would try such a thing in the face of such insurmountable odds? No one. That's why we've remained a free country for over 200 years.
Now, there are many people in this country who will try to tell you that the 2nd Amendment only applies to the National guard, or the army, or the police force. Wrong. Look at the phrase, "...the right of the people…". If that phrase means the National Guard, then it also means the National Guard every other time "...the people…" are mentioned in the Bill of Rights. The National Guard is the only group to enjoy freedom of speech? The right to unreasonable search and seizure? The right to freedom of religion? I think not. The phrase "...the people…" means the citizenry, you and me. Don't believe me? Read some of the quotes from those who WROTE the Bill of Rights.
2nd Amendment quotes.
The 2nd Amendment serves 3 purposes:
1) It gives you the right and ability to defend yourself and what is yours from criminals.
2) It keeps our government from deciding we're too free.
3) It keeps the protection of our country from invaders in everyone's hands.
Now, you may ask, in these days of nuclear and biological weapons, what good will a handgun or rifle be? Well, you don't nuke a city you want to keep and you don't release bio-agents in an area you want to occupy. You send in troops. Troops can be fought with handguns and rifles. A terrorist attack is a different matter, it can only be prevented, not fought.
You may also think, "I don't need a gun, that's what the police are for." How long is the average response time for a call to 911? Long enough for a burglar to tie you up and take everything you own? Long enough for a criminal to make sure there are no witnesses? Unless there just happens to be a police cruiser right outside, you're screwed. Here's the brutal truth: The police can't protect you the same way a firearm in your hands can.
Criminals know which areas of the country have passed Right to Carry laws and which haven't. They know which areas are likely to have the lowest number of privately held firearms, and which areas are likely to have the highest. If you were a criminal, where would you stalk your prey?
You may also hear people saying we need to ban guns because of accidents, and people who use guns for violent purposes. Again… look at Kosovo. 9,000 people were killed last year in the USA by handguns. How many people have been killed and forced to leave their homes by the Serbians? How many were killed by Hitler? Stalin? Countries that don't permit their citizens the Right to Bear arms are asking for genocide. What's 9,000 compared to millions? Well? THAT is the brutal truth. 0.000036% of the US population dies due to handgun violence every year. Is that price worth protection from Genocide? Oppression? Yes. Freedom has a price, but by God, it's better than the alternative.
Gun ownership is as much a deterrent as it is a means of immediate protection. The founding fathers knew that, and it's still relevant today. We must be on an equal footing with those who would do us harm. The only other option is to be a nation of victims.
