if you're interested in listening to the NSW Police, read on!!

But before we start, please be aware that the NSW Police are implementing a digital radio system.

NEW YEAR'S EVE FIREWORK CUING FREQUENCIES. This was very exiting.

THIS SITE IS SET UP PURELY FOR ENJOYMENT. IF YOU WISH TO USE THESE FREQUENCIES FOR FINANCIAL GAIN OR CRIME, YOU ARE NOT WELCOME HERE

No liability is taken by the owner of this site for frequency details. All care is taken and most frequencies have been checked personally.
If you want an official frequency guide, and are willing to pay for it, get the "Register of Australian Goverment Frequencies" from Dick Smith Electronics (or another one of their scanner books). The frequency information found here is not from a book, and has been discovered personally with my own scanner. Therefore this material is not copyright.

now that's over, enjoy your listening!

POLICE REGISTER

The police use a very good system called a voting system. This means that for one police channel they will use a number of different repeaters to get good coverage of an area. Their car (or portable) radios are set to a channel number (such as "Position 85") and scan the set repeater frequencies for that particular channel. The radio finds and locks into the strongest signal, therefore using the closest repeater. This system means that you will have to program into your scsanner either the closest repeater frequency to you or all that channel's frequencies and scan them. The repeater locations are coming soon.

When you're listening to the police, you will often hear a short beep. They have a meaning
Signal Meaning
One beepMemo for cars
Two BeepsHold up or major crime
Three beepsOfficer in trouble - Start the tape rolling!

NSW police use 467.850 MHz to 469.425 MHz, and they also use 78MHz. I previously held that they were also on 489MHZ, but thanks to Dave, VK2GZ (owner of the Spectrum's Edge page), I have found that I was incorrect, and was actually a result of the IF in my scanner. Sorry to all who I mislead.
There are not any 78MHz repeaters any closer to Sydney than Mittagong, because the VHF propogation being better than UHF is only needed in non-metro areas.

Sydney Major Listening Channels

I have included this small list because most internet lists I have visited do not include transmitter locations. For a complete police list, visit the Spectrum's Edge Scanning Page, the original NSW scanning page.
Please note, the most critical channels (Parramatta, Flemington, Bankstown, and soon the city) are digital, and there is no way of monitoring these transmissions. See the Spectrum's Edge NewsDesk for regular updates.
Frequency (MHz) UserTX location
467.850"Endeavour":Burwood, Eastwood, Gladesville, Leighcardt. Highway cars (eg "Endeavour 235")cover Pennant Hills and Newtown as well as around this area. Newtown is on a different channel though.West Pennant Hills
468.100EndeavourParramatta River (leighcardt?)
468.525Eastern Suburbs - Randwick, etc.
468.400CityCentrepoint. Soon to roll over to digital. Details at the Spectrum's Edge page
468.725"Delta" - North Shore, Harbourside, Manly, Kuringai, Chatswood"Abbotsleigh" water tower, Wahroonga
468.075"Delta" - either this or 468.725 is the only recievable freq. in the Harbour Tunnel (I can't remember which). So if you're delayed in the tunnel, put them in.Sydney Harbour (possibly North Head)
468.450"Delta"Terrey Hills
467.900"Delta"Hornsby Heights
468.925"Delta"Northern Beaches (possibly Bilgola Plateu)
468.000 "Lima"Liverpool, etc. Lots of action!!
467.300 "Lima"Lots of action!!

I found out from a police man that police working at the Olympic Site were on channel 18 (468.225MHz), however, I did not find any signals on this frequency or the input frequency for this channel. On the night after the opening ceremony of the Paralympics (I was in the cast for both Opening Ceremonies), another policeman said that the radios they were using were "different". Now that the olympics are over, they will be using channel "Golf" again, which is now digital.

Some of my favourite listening frequencies.
Frequency (MHz) UserNotes
468.400"Alpha" :City (Sydney).I think this channel is transmitted from Centerpoint Tower.
468.475Channel 26. Car to Car.This channel works through a repeater which I think is also on Centerpoint. It was used for Olympic Torch cars, and is used for all car to car work, such as parking officers who need to talk to each other. Many city special events are now digital ASTRO mode, however, 26 is still sometimes used.
468.775Ch 38. Secondary Car-Car channel.
469.125Chanel 52. Special Ops. This is used mostly as a car to car channel for region Endeavour.
469.100This is the channel for Maitland, Cessnock, Nelson Bay, Raymond Terrace, Muswellbrook, Singleton, Buladelah. Highway cars are called "Manning" cars. Transmitted from Buladelah. This is the only UHF freq. for this vote, the rest are on 78MHz, and there's lots of them!
78.475Same vote as above, but most of the southern side of Port Stephens has better reception of this frequency because VHF propogates better tham UHF. Tx is at Gan Gan Hill, Nelson Bay.

For further details, visit
The Spectrum's Edge

On New Years Eve 2000, the Police, as well as their standard operating channels, used these three extra channels for traffic, etc control in the specified areas.
They now appear to be using ASTRO digital for special events such as this and big rugby games, etc., however, keep monitoring channel 26 during these times, as ANZAC day a while ago was analogue when they had already "rolled over" to digital for special ops.

NYE firework cuing for 2000/2001 used frquencies on 164MHz, however, when I programmed them into my scanner the next NYE, I heard nothing. The first year they had voice cue and timecode.
Leave a comment in my guestbook if you are interested in obtaining the frequencies anyway, or if you have further information that we can share with everybody.
