we woke up early on tuesday morning to find our way into the wicklow mountains. after a jog across st. stephens green in dublin, we found the bus and got settled for the quick drive....

glendalough means valley of the two lakes. it is known for its early christian settlement founded by st. kevin in the 6th century. all this means cool ruins, cross filled graveyards and a very old stone tower.

to the left is the surviving 12th century chapel with the wicklow mountains in the background. carrie and i are in front of the stone tower at the bottom. it took me awhile to figure out why the only door was 12 feet up!

after roaming around the ruins, we headed off to see the other attraction...the lakes.
we hiked along the edge of the smaller lake heading toward st. kevin's cell. there were rumored to be a waterfall between the two lakes. for awhile all we could find were these small falls that seemed to come from nowhere. it was as if the land couldn't hold all that water. here's emily with one of the larger ones.

but we didn't lose hope of finding the big one. after a bit we found a sign and followed it up a missing path. at the top of a very steep hill, we found water. not quite the waterfall we had been hoping for but it was a start!
it was then we noticed the paved path on the other side of the stream. go figure!
so we headed down the path and discovered the waterfall step by step. the middle picture is the top part of the falls. the water was a beautiful and clear emerald green. and there's carrie and em again at the bottom.
because of the water's path there was a breathtaking sight at every turn of the trail. so the detour was worth it!
we ended the day hamming it up for the camera. here we are at the edge of the larger lake. these pictures don't do the scenery justice so you'll just have to visit for yourself!
