Answers to Prayer and Providential Blessings

Answer 42 The Red-Nosed Brown Bear

 

 

 

It was my birthday and Sevilla was sad. Now, this reaction may seem strange, but we were entering our third month of living in motel rooms in California. She despised our current living arrangements and could not reconcile how God would require this of us as it seemed so contrary to her own expectations.

 

 

My birthday meant little to me as it often passed unnoticed by anyone other then my two sisters.

 

 

It was mid-morning when a knock sounded on our door. Reaching behind me, I opened it and immediately heard two female voices began singing “Happy Birthday.”

 

 

The motel owner/manager and the maid entered the room bearing a birthday cake with one candle and a card which they gave to me after completing their rendition of this familiar song.

 

 

I was a bit surprised by this display of thoughtfulness, appreciating the card more then the cake but Sevilla was enthralled, nearly breaking into tears. She was more appreciative of this spontaneous gesture from two women who scarcely knew us then I was. To her, it was another indication that Christ would take care of us, despite her bitter reactions over our living circumstances.

 

 

Incidently, the card bore the character of a serious looking brown bear with a red nose, a green pencil stuck behind his ear, wearing glasses, with several books protruding from under his arm, who was using a calculator. The inscription said, “Did you know the average age of everyone having a birthday today is 28.5 years.”

 

 

This was so much like me that I had to laugh. The serious academic type, making a profound statement, only to be wrong, was precious.

 

 

I am grateful to the Lord for cheering Sevilla with the cake and thoughtfulness.
