This is what present-day Underground Atlanta looked like before it was underground. How did it get underground? See the Kimball House? See where the railroad tracks come in from the left of the map? See the train depot with the rounded roof? We began to build bridges over the railroad tracks to facilitate traffic. Atlanta has always been a railroad town. That's how we became a town in the first place. And as cars became more popular we had to navigate the busy tracks. As more and more bridges were built over this area the city began to take on two levels. Then they built the 'viaduct' which finished the job. The Kimball House is long gone. The building that houses Swift & Co. is in present-day underground.
