My Favorite Georgia History Books
Whatever Became of Atlanta? by Norman Shavin
This is one of my favorite books of all-time. It's nothing but before and after pictures of historic scenes and buildings in Atlanta. There is very little text, but the captions are comprehensive. Some of the pictures are heartbreaking - like a before picture of a beautiful Victorian home and an after picture of a parking lot! Extremely compelling reading for anyone with even a passing interest in Atlanta's history.
Yesterday's Atlanta by Franklin Garrett
Another excellent book that is full of old photos. This one has some great text, but it's the pictures that really make it. And if you don't know, Franklin Garrett is considered to be an expert on Atlanta's history.
Civil War Sites in Georgia by Jim Miles
This book doesn't go into tremendous detail on either the battles or the scenes as they appear today, but it does seem to include all of the Civil War events that occurred here. By the way, the Civil War in Georgia was more than just the Atlanta Campaign. There's even a section on Civil War happenings in south Georgia. Hmmm . . .
The Atlanta Campaign : A Civil War Driving Tour of Atlanta-Area Battlefields by J. Britt McCarley
Honestly, this is not much more than a handbook. It's only about a hundred pages, and its maps are just pen and ink drawings. But the author truly tries to give todays driver an idea of how the battles proceeded according to today's landmarks. And he really does a pretty good job. After all, it's not his fault that Atlanta failed to preserve her Civil War history.
