JOHN BAZEL WALLINGFORD

John Bazel Wallingford married Ann Cambel on 12 January 1787 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. John's guardianship is recorded in the Guardian Bonds of Anne Arundel County, Maryland [1780 - 1785, TG1, p. 132]. It is dated 13 April 1784. It proves that he was the son of James Wallingsford. John and Ann probably moved to Harford County, Maryland. In the 1790 census for Harford County there was a John Willingford living in Spesutia Lower Hundred. There were four white inhabitants living in the househould.

There are two possibilities for where they went after 1790. Either they were the parents of the Alabama/Tennesse branch of the family or they moved to Kentucky and lived among the Wallingfords of Mason County. The problem with John and Ann being the founders of the Alabama/Tennessee branch of the Wallingsfords is that the census records of Gibson County, Tennessee show that Isaac Wallingsford was born in Virginia about 1790. If the John Willingford who was living in Harford County, Maryland in 1790 was John Bazel, then he could not have been the father of Isaac. Evidence from Kentucky gives more clues that John Bazel was not the founder of the Alabama/Tennesse branch.

The tax lists for Mason County, Kentucky list a John Waringford in 1795 and a B. John Walingsford in 1797. This John "Wallingford" should not be confused with Capt John Wallingford who was a son of Nicholas and Alice Hayes Wallingford. Captain John Wallingford would have only been 14 in 1795 and 16 in 1797. Benjamin Wallingford of Ohio was also living in Mason County at the same time. If it is true that Benjamin of Ohio was the same Benjamin named in the will of Elizabeth Clark of Frederick/Berkeley County, Virginia in 1772 (Berkeley County, WV Will book 1, p. 11) then the John Waringford/Walingsford listed in the tax records of Mason County could be his brother and not John Bazel. However, there is more evidence that this was John Bazel.

Aside from the fact that the tax collector listed a B. John Walingsford in 1797, there are two marriage bonds in Lewis County, Kentucky (formed from Mason County in 1807) of interest. Elizabeth Wallingsford married Joseph Haines in 1811 and Polly Wallingford married Abner Foster in 1808. Both marriage bonds list John B Wallingsford as the father. Polly and Elizabeth and their husbands moved to Ohio. According to a biography of one Elizabeth's sons, he was born in Lawrence County, Ohio in 1830. Another son's biography states that Elizabeth was born in Maryland. According to her tombstone she was born in 1792. According to a descendant of Abner and Mary/Polly Wallingford Foster, Mary was born about 1790 in Maryland. Most of their children were born in Adams County, Ohio which is just across the Ohio River from Mason County, Kentucky. In the 1820 and 1830 census, John B Wallingsford was living in Sprigg Township in Adams County. After that there is no record of him.

Until proven otherwise, Elizabeth and Polly will be listed as children of John Bazel and Ann Cambel.

Mary/Polly born about 1790 in Maryland.
Elizabeth was born 26 August 1792 in Maryland and died 24 December 1861 in Spencer County, Indiana.
