Union Baptist Church Inscriptions

[5187 Ave K, Lipscomb, (Jefferson Co) Alabama USA]

Compiled by Martha Jean Crain, Mildred Brown Crain, Kay Rockett and Barbara Rockett

Dear Ancestor

Your tombstone stands among the rest:
Neglected and alone.
The name and date are chiseled out
On polished, marbled stone.

It reaches out to all who care
It is too late to mourn.
You did not know that I exist
You died and I was born.

Yet each of us are cells of you
In flesh, in blood, in bone.
Our blood contracts and beats a pulse
Entirely not our own.

Dear Ancestor, the place you filled
One hundred years ago
Spreads out among the ones you left
Who would have loved you so.

I wonder if you lived and loved,
I wonder if you knew
That someday I would find this spot
And come to visit you.

This plaque is inscribed as follows: "Union Baptist Church was organized in 1834 by 18 or 20 members from Canaan Church. The Lipscomb area was then known as East End. Members of the Rockett and Ware families donated the original two acres of this site and a log cabin, which served as the church until a wooden building was built in 1888. The present edifice was erected in 1922. Many of the charter members are buried in the adjacent cemetery." ~ Alabama Register of Historic Places, April 11, 1984

Two of the oldest tombstones in the cemetery ~ Richard Rockett and his wife Martha Giffin McClure Rockett. Both headstones have a hand partly closed and pointing upwards, with the inscription "Gone home". Just above each name is engraved "Sacred to the Memory of..." These crumbling tombstones have been replaced with a double marble tombstone, and these headers now mark the foot of each grave.
